I just took delivery of the '83 931 on BaT. VERY different driving experience from my 928. The lack of power steering will definitely be a good arm workout Also, this is a perfect example of the early era of turbo cars. There is zero doubt when that thing spools up!

About that turbo....I don't really hear the turbo woosh but rather a rattle that sounds like it's coming from right behind the center speaker grill or whatever that is. I don't think it IS coming from there, but that's what it sounds like. This definitely seems to correspond to when the turbo spools up. Is there anything right up by the firewall in the engine bay that would be rattling only when on-boost? Obviously, I don't know the car yet....

Driving it some more, it's maybe more of a buzzing than a rattling.

Funny how your 82 experience differs from mine. I get a lot of turbo spool sound without the total kick in the pants like my '80 931. In the S1 (1980 931) you feel the boost come in precisely whereas the '82 builds in a more linear fashion. It really is loud inside and out as a bystander

BTW, everything rattles in mine so I will have to tune in on a buzz if there is one

...and you really made a big switch from all those RX7's

I'm actually wondering if a PO turned up the boost. It seems like more than...what, 6 psi or so? I need to get a boost gauge on this thing.

I did some test runs with the windows down, and heard the turbo...the buzzing/rattle was a lot less obvious then.

I loved the rotaries, but after my last one was totaled, I spent a few years driving an SUV (still have it 'cause it's useful, just not particularly fun) and when I decided I needed some more performance in my life, I decided to try the Germans

Rattling could be heat shields on the exhaust. Pretty common.

I would definitely get a boost gauge on there since it's obvious the car has other mods (ignition system). It would be good to know exactly what you're dealing with.

Another shameless plug:

Really good spot for a boost gauge and AFR gauge.

I need to un-ass and install my gauges in there, vs. the home-brewed sheet aluminum one I'm still using...

Maybe if the car ran worth a damn, I'd be more on top of it...

Funny, I was JUST looking at that! Is it too late to add it to my order? I just can't decide if I would like the angled look or not.

Also, boost gauge is now, but eventually I think I would add an AFR gauge. Is it more or less a consensus that those narrowband gauges are worthless?

Any particular recommendation of gauges in general? I had Autometer in my RX-7 way back when, but there's a Bosch vacuum/boost gauge that looks like a decent match for stock, and it's quite inexpensive.

No problem to add to order, I'll send you invoice now and include with your shipment.

Boost gauge: egauges.com carries VDO gauges that match OEM. I don't have the link handy at the moment, but I have a couple of their vac-boost gauges.

AFR: definitely wideband. No use for narrow band. I re-sell the AEM analog gauge. I also have the PLX digital boost and PLX digital AFR gauges in my 941. As much as like the analog gauges for period correct look, functionally, the digital AFR is much easier to read "on the fly". I have the PLX stuff in my 941, and the VDO / AEM combo in my Club Sport. The 937 also has a VDO boost gauge (aftermarket added by previous owner).

BOOOST!!!
https://www.egauges.com/Boost-and-Turbocharger-Gauges-s/22047.htm

I'm using an Innovate gauge, primarily because not only inexpensive, but also multiple analog outputs for data acq systems. Have the same one on my racecar...

I use the Innovate system in my race car also. Captures data so that I can play back to my laptop while displaying live on the mounted gauges.

Please reference the following album:

https://photos.app.goo.gl/Q93L7D32fP5Qksxs2

(Hopefully you can see the pictures there)

In no particular order...

1 - Weird toggle switch. It doesn't do anything obvious. Any thoughts?

2 - Console stack - The duel knob for AC replacing the center gauge looks aftermarket, but matches my user's manual. The climate control head unit looks stock, but does not match my user's manual. Furthermore, it has fan controls which would have allowed retention of all three gauges, but none of the knobs or sliders seem to work. Weird?

3 - Is there supposed to be some sort of hood shock? See the little ball mount thing on the driver's side, up near the firewall...looks very much like a hood shock mount on my 928, although in a weird spot.

4 - Fuel lines...should I be concerned about this? Lots of deteriorated insulation. The lines themselves appear intact, I don't see or smell fuel...soft fuel lines are mandatory "replace immediately" items on the 928 due to a history of fires...I don't see much discussion of that here, thoughts?

I want to dig into my mysterious ignition system, but other than the coil and distributor, I'm not sure what to look for...where would the DITC bits go, etc? I will take close-ups of all that stuff, maybe you guys can help me figure out what I have (supposedly, the DITC has been replaced with something and no one knows exactly what). I do know there's a sensor in the intake tube running up over the valve cover, that I assumed was intake temp, but I think is actually boost-related, and that sensor is disconnected. How is that supposed to be used, on a stock car?

I was glad to see you got the car ! I bought a similar car in blue (1981 931). Mine has the Haltech Sprint 500 EMS. I got a dyno sheet with mine...max HP 146 at .5 psi... I'll likely add a boost gauge and AFR gauge too.

Nice! Is the Haltech replacing just the ignition, or is it a full EFI system?
