I don't have pictures of my own yet, because I just won the auction...the car is still several states away. However, you can see it here: https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1982-porsche-924-turbo-931/?blm=1

It has a mysterious unknown ignition system, so digging into that should be fun, but otherwise seems to be a nice driver...actually, that's misleading, as it seems to be a nice driver regardless, but I will definitely need to understand what that ignition system is and what it's doing.

I don't know too much about other maintenance history, save that the turbo was rebuilt a few years ago, and the seller did not know when the timing belt was last changed, which to me means it should be changed fairly promptly.

Any other thoughts on "immediate" needs that should be addressed, or at least investigated?

I come from the 928 world, so timing belts, soft fuel lines and power steering high pressure hoses all typically fall into that category with that car.

I will get more info regarding exactly what's been done over the last year or two by the time the car is delivered...

Timing belt, water pump, good oil..dont go cheap here.
Cam oiler elbow...then see how it drives

Is there a recommended water pump? In the 928 world, we've had a terrible time with water pumps. The Porsche-branded ones are crazy expensive, and most of the cheaper aftermarket pumps seem to leak, seize or eat into the block.

Timing belts are cheap and easy on these, like $30 and done..
Water pump doesn't matter as much as in the 928/944 because they aren't on the timing belt..

I'd do an injector flow test on it just because, ngk copper plugs, timing belt, drive the crap out of it..

Find and correct the oil leak that's coating the tranny.

Agree with the others above on initial maintenance.

The wet trans looks like a lose or ill fitting bottom drain plug. I wouldn't drive until inspecting further.

Neat looking car, not that many 82 models around either. Suspect that once you have it sorted you'll find it a great little car.

Thanks everyone. I'm excited for it to get here! I will definitely check out that goopy transmission.

I've ordered the Haynes manual, which I've seen recommended a few places, so hopefully that has pretty good info regarding the timing belt job, etc. I did that on my 928, which was a fairly involved and long (I'm slow, plus a lot of other stuff to take care of popped up) process, but it does sound like this is quite a bit easier (and cheaper!) on this car.

Good start, but unfortunately, the Haynes doesn't cover nuances unique to the 931, and especially a late-run series 2. PM me with coordinates and I can hook you up with other more authoritative reference material.

As I posted on BAT, I'm very curious about the ignition system. I would want to know what distributor is being used, whether it is controlled electronically, and whether the system retains the IAT and MAP references to manage timing. If not, you'll want to proceed with caution. It's probably OK in relatively stock form with easy street driving, but I would be very careful about extended boost runs, especially in hot weather, until we know how that system functions. If they just slapped in an S1 distributor ... or worse, one of the NA distributors ... you're going to have less than ideal ignition curve.

I have been poking about your website At some point I want your air-water intercooler I think...but fist things first. I too am very curious about that ignition system. Comparing to other S2 engine bay pictures, it looks like on this car there is a wire grounded to the valve cover, and no wire going to some sensor in the air tube that attaches to the intake manifold....I was wondering if this is the IAT sensor and they've just grounded that wire? I could be all wrong here...but that was definitely different from other car pics with which I compared it.

It's more likely that it's the lead to the overboost switch. It is common to have these bypassed by simply tying them to ground. With the DITC gone, there would be no reason to connect the IAT to anything at all, as it is only used by the DITC.
