My 931(1979) need new doors and I have a pair of 944 turbo doors(1987) laying in my parts pile...

But the locking mecanism is not the same(the locking pin on the car itself or the mecanism in the door have to be changed/modified).

Anyone here have done it before? what is the easiest way to make them fit on the car?

My plans(before i realized that the mecanism was different) was:
Just bolt the new doors to the hinges and get the wirering done for the electric windows, mirrors and central locking, so my 931 would be updated with those options.

I haven't done this before but I'm aware of the difference of which you speak. The easiest conversion would be to transfer the early locking mechanism into 951 doors. I presume your '51 doors have the script door handles. What I don't know is whether the early mechanisms will work with the script handles, so you might need to use the early handles as well.

I just fitted an early ('83) door on my 924S. It worked perfectly fine, but required a little adjustment of the hinges to get the gaps right. The only difference I noticed were some of the stamps in the metal on the inside were different, and the window channel was its own separate piece on the 924S door, and it was built in to the 944 door.

I also used Porsche script door handles from my brothers '88 turbo. If the latch mechanisms are different could you just swap out one, the other, or both?

The 83' and your 924 S should both be "late" cars, (at least on ROW cars, the change between early and late 924's is in 1980). and my Turbo is from 1979

I found that the car has a different shape where the locking mechanism from the door meets the mechanism on the car.

The locking mechanism on the late doors are bigger than the early, so the late door can not close on my early car.

The locking mechanism is also mounted a lot different so it is not just a 5 min job to change that part.

In the next couple of days I will take an early door and my 944 turbo door put them on the table side by side. Then start disassemble them both at the same time and see if I can find any shortcuts so I can fit the 944 turbo door on my 924 turbo - but I am not optimistic and I am sure it require some cutting to fit the early mechanism to the late door.

Ah I see. Sounds like a job, but nothing is impossible with enough time/money.

Best of luck!

How Do you make them fit?
I made the early mechs fit in the doors today (pictures later) but I can not make the late handles push in the right spot on the early mechs to actually open The door. I can open them from inside but not with the handles outside the door.

Sooo glad I found this thread. I was planning on swapping doors from a 1980 931 to a 1977 924 this weekend and didn't see the difference till now. Let me know how you make out. Good luck!

You have to cut a hole in the doors for the 77' locking mechanism to fit in the door, if you go with the early handles it is just the same like in the old doors. If you want to change to the later handles you have to fit all of the inside trigger mechanism from the early handles inside the later handles(requires some grinding and you have to split the handles totally).

The most tricky part is to make the holes in the right spot in the doors.

If I find a way to upload pictures I do have some on my phone showing the different steps...
