|
|
Back in late '15, I bought an '80 924T for restoration. It had a fresh restored dashboard from 'Just Dashes' when I obtained it.
I'm ready to install the instrument cluster bezel. I know there are two shorter screws that screw into the underside of the dash. The problem is, I'm not sure how they were originally kept in place. The dash has a smooth expanse of foam above the bezel cubby. It seems incorrect to just let the screws tap into foam. I'd expect some kind of clip or reinforcement.
What do the bezel screw holes look like on the underside of a factory-original dashboard? It seems easy enough to epoxy some clips in place, but I want it to be as the factory had done. I care enough about the details, even if no one may see the effort.

Wow!!!! What was Magnus' shop like???? Very cool you got to meet him. Are the outlaw Fuchs on your car? They look great.
To answer your question there are two cardboardish bumps under the dash that hold two screw plates, the little slide on ones that are all over these cars. You should be able to see them by looking just underneath. I don't remember a lot of foam under there, but mine were not as nice as yours when I started digging into them.
+1 on more pictures!

If I'm correct about which screws you were asking about, you will need two speed nuts designed for metal screws. Something like this:

I didn't mean to mislead, but can see where you may have thought those Outlaw wheels were mine. They're not- it's just a pic of Magnus's 964 @ SEMA this past year, with my 931 glove box door. He is a cool guy for the three or four minutes I spoke with him, but I was just one of the thousands of minions there _________________ 1990 Corrado 16V Lysholm

Thanks for the info, ideola! I will excavate some foam today.
The cluster screws are not original, i suspect. They are just cut screws so they wouldn't go through the dash. Not much thread to even thread into a speed nut.
Would you care to sell two correct screws and every fastener for a console installation? _________________ 1990 Corrado 16V Lysholm

Fit for cluster bezel is 'like a glove' in the restored dash-
But confirmed- no clips to be found for cluster. I dig around to try to find a tab, with no luck. I'll have to glue clips in place and mount the clip flush into the foam. Shouldn't be too hard. Thanks for the help!
