Hello all,
This seems as good a place as any to introduce myself and my car. I recently bought this car as a not quite finished project with the intention of using it as a track car but keeping it road legal. It's a 1981 924 with full body kit, Rover 3.5ltr V8 conversion (very small block 213 to you Americans) running Edelbrock CFM 500 4 barrel carb and performance intake, performance cam, stage 2 heads, and a very large exhaust. The interior is stripped, Corbeau Clubman seats and 6 point bolt in cage. It has Spax coil overs, 944 turbo 4pot front brakes.

Lets see if I can post some pics

Great swap, probably very similar weight to the cast iron 4...my buddy had one of these blocks in his shop and you could pick it up with one finger.

Nice engine swap, in the mgb gt (iron head and block) i heard that the rover v8 actually was lighter than the standard 1.8.

I raced a V-8 Rover engined Triumph TR8 at the 24 hours at Nelson Ledges in 1990. The engine ran like a clock but the car sucked. Now you have a happy marriage

Thanks everyone for the comments.

Yes, the engine is no heavier than the original. In addition the headlight motor and mechanism are removed as well so extra weight saving up front.

Its not the most powerful of engines, should make 200-210bhp at the flywheel, but is very use-able power! Yet to be dyno'd as I am still figuring out a decent crankcase breather system. The setup in the pics doesn't have wide enough pipework to vent gases created at higher rpms.

This should be a fun and useable package once I get a few more of the details worked out.

here's a couple more pics

RE: breather, you could go BMW route and use a vacuum pump on the crank case.

The highs and lows of classic sports car ownership. About a week ago I was chuffed to bits that the GT8 passed the MOT with flying colours. Great I thought, I can enjoy it for a couple of months before taking it off the road and getting into the meat of the project. So, I stuck 4 new tyres on and booked into a track evening for Monday. Then I took it along to a show on Sunday, where it got quite a bit of interest. On the way back from the show "oh bugger, why cant I change gear" - something in the clutch release mechanism has failed! So my hand has been forced and it's off the road and I've started tearing it down. Gutted....

So here begins the project thread in earnest. Next step, working out how to drop the trans out.

So, the transaxle is removed and the torque tube out the way. Then it was a 5hr struggle to get the clutch bellhousing off.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/144556909@N08/shares/S39G82

I was expecting to find something broken inside, to do with the clutch release mechanism, but no it was all fine. Turns out that the cable operated lever had slipped on the shaft. A bit annoying as I didnt have to spend 2 1/2 days taking it all apart, just needed to reposition and tighten the lever.

However, having taken it all apart I have noticed a couple of things that I am not overly happy about.
1) It's the original 924 driveline with 20mm shafts, I had been lead to believe it had been upgraded to 944 driveline with 25mm shafts.
2) It has a 924 215mm friction plate (because of the shaft size) but is RV8 flywheel and cover plate which really requires 240mm fiction plate

What is the safe HP and Torque limit for the 20mm shafts of the 924? My engine makes ~200hp and ~200ft-lbs torque but am intending to up this in the future to ~230hp / torques. The factor here is that this engine delivers the torque from lower down the rev range and redlines at about 5700rpm which is quite a bit lower than the Porsche turbo engines.

Logic tells me to upgrade to the 944 driveline and the 25mm shafts but its not really planned in the budget. This is a track-day (circuit) car so will get pushed quite hard.

Comments / input welcome and appreciated.

I think raceboy has run over 230hp on a 20mm input shaft.

I decided to go for the upgrade to 944 Transaxle and Torque tube for peace of mind but primarily to make it easier to get the clutch assembly right.

anyway, the replacement Transaxle arrived today and I am very pleased. It came complete with nearly new mounts (mine are shot), and the shaft coupler. They had even cleaned and repainted it, result. Think this has to be the best ebay bargain I have ever had - I won it for £52 (~$45). Admittedly it cost me more than that to ship it but still a bargain.

Next mission is to drop the rear suspension so that I can get the torque tube out.
