Well, it's a matter of taste, no matter what you do someone always thinks you should have done differently
Anyway, I will be getting a new device soon which is sort of "activity tracker" for cars (and bikes etc), that is basically a datalogging/lapt timing device in one and very small package. It has 50Hz GPS, 3-axis gyroscope+ accelerometer, SD storage, OBDII/CAN interface (for engine data input which I will be using with VEMS) and bunch of analog inputs for additional sensors.
My friend is the founder and developer of this project, a die-hard car and Porsche fan.
