Carrera RSR wrote: | So 2500lbs is 1133kgs. Mine weighed in at 1120kgs with 2/3rds tank of fuel on a brand new calibrated weighbridge. As with yourself I've lost a lot surplus weight but gained some back with cage and IC.
What I'd like to determine is that the 1180kg as quoted by Porsche is dry or wet weight and/or inclusive of electric options, sunroof, spare wheel and tools etc or not. In the FSM it also states 1280kgs, is this wet? Is this including options?
Carrera GTS is quoted at 1120kgs with 245bhp. That's my target. Worthy of Club Sport status then I think |
I should have added, 2500# was somewhere between 3/4 and 1/2 tank. So I have about 13kg / 30# to go to hit the 1120kg number. Hmmm...might be time to look into a fiberglass replica of the 931 hood!
In any event, I hadn't thought about the comparison to GTS weight...makes me feel a lot better about where the car currently sits. And yes, getting to that ~250bhp number would be great...the 10:1 weight to power ratio!
As for worthiness, I don't think there's any question or debate about your car in that regard _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

I've lost all interior tar sound insulation except for the rear deck. Removed all sound insulation on the bulkhead and front half of transmission tunnel. No spare wheel, jack or tools. Stock seats swapped out, no rear seats, no power windows or mirrors. added weight of roll cage and IC. But no plastic panels or polycarbonate rear hatch! If I switched to poly windows that's another 40kg of weight saving!! _________________ 1980 931 - forged pistons, Piper cam, K27/26 3257 6.10 hybrid turbo, 951 FMIC, custom intake, Mittelmotor dizzy & cam pulley, H&S exhaust, GAZ Gold, Fuch'ed, Quaife

Last time I went with my car to the scales it showed 1180 without driver (although truck scale, so not that precise). My car is heavy since it has electric windows, mirrors, all insulation left, thick torsion bars, very thick ARBs, heavy D90 street wheels etc. It has a fiberglass racing seat, but with the mounts on its not that much lighter than a std seat. This weight was with a lot of fuel in and a couple of liters of washing fluid.
I´m more focused on driving fast (and having fun of course)on track though, less focused on bragging on the net about my new CF mirrors Wouldn't mind 100kg of, but don't want the compromises or costs There is so MANY other parameters to drive fast around the track.
Great work with the CS, hope it will see some track soon !!! |

Lexan hatch in 931 hatch frame. |
Dan, do you know how much weight you save with a Lexan hatch? And do you think it's practical on a car driven often on the road? _________________ 1981 932 with mods:

George, for a street driven / daily driver car, I'm not sure I would do the hatch. The weight savings is somewhere around 40#, although that is an estimate (~60# for stock vs. ~20# for Lexan).
There are a several issues to consider with the Lexan hatch.
First is sealing. The hatch is not heavy enough to properly seal all the way around, so you may end up with air gaps that let exhaust or rain/road spray into the hatch area.
Second is visibility. The Lexan scratches easily, which affects visibility, and it also creates more glare in certain lighting conditions, so rearward visibility can be problematic at times. Not so much of an issue on the track, but driving around town could become a bother.
Third is usability. I do not have hatch struts on mine for fear of twisting the frame off of the Lexan (it doesn't secure very firmly), so every time I open the hatch, I have to make sure I have something nearby with which to prop it open.
Fourth is noise. It lets in a LOT more road noise thru the back.
So all that said, if it were my only car and one I planned to drive all the time on the road, particularly in inclement weather, I probably would not bother. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made

Here's my list:- No spare wheel, jack or tools
- Replaced stock seats with lightweight single piece Sparcos
- Rear seat delete
- Carpet delete from the rear seat back
- Headliner and trim delete, including rear quarter liners and sunroof liner
- Car already had manual window regulators
- Power mirror delete, with driver-side-only light-weight 1978 manual mirror
- Lexan hatch
- Fixed headlight conversion
- 7Jx16 Club Sport rims (8.2kg/18# each). Car came with 6Jx15 spiderwebs, but couldn't retain those due to the Brembo calipers...plus I wanted the wider track and the forged rims. So definitely up a little on weight here as compared to Fuchs...
- Alu suspension components (arguable if any weight savings here...)
- Car had no A/C to start with
- Radio delete, including head unit, all speakers, and antenna
- Lightweight Odyssey battery
- Gear reduction starter
- Euro bumpers (car came that way, but definitely a weight savings compared to US-spec cars)
There may be more, but that's all I can think of at the moment.
Added some weight with the charge cooler setup, plus the bolt-in roll bar (not a full cage), and the AFR and boost gauges. I did not remove any sound deadening material other than the large heavy mat in the hatch area. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Finally got around to installing the Alcantara-covered dash (by Classic 9 Leathershop), brand new Momo steering wheel, and Claude's excellent center-speaker dual gauge pod:

Seems to be some nice quality on the work with the dash, alcantara is a really nice material! , now its just some track time that lacks to complete the club sport badge _________________ 1980 924 Turbo

Dash looks lovely !
You need to take better pics of this interior.
Also, you need some lightweight mats _________________ https://www.the924.com |

It may not be close, but there is a Great Plains Region DE at Raceway Park of the Midlands, RPM, near Glenwood, IA on April 30th and May 1st, 2016. RPM is under new management and many improvements were made for 2015 and more to come in 2016. A foundation for a new classroom/administration building was poured last Friday. Improvements are planned for the paddock in early 2016.
