I discovered over the weekend that the carpet was wet behind my passengers seat. I thought maybe it was the drain hose from the sunroof but that exits in the rear wheelwell. Any ideas. Maybe someone has seen this before. Also is the Fan assembly for the interior removeable from under the hood? _________________ I love gereatric rock. |

Wet passenger footwell is a common problem. There is a tee for the drain tubes right around the fuel filler tube. Good chance it's come undone, or the tubes could be clogged causing it to back up. Other common culprits are the sunroof seals (one on the body and one on the sunroof itself), the hatch seal, and the door seals.
The fan is not really serviceable. You cannot remove it from under the hood. The only option is to remove the dash completely and take the entire HVAC assembly out, at which point you can disassemble the HVAC box to get at the fan. These are NLA, so about your only option is to find someplace that might be able to repair the fan (assuming it's bad). A common problem with the fan circuit is that the heater control sliders get all gummed up with grease and deteriorating foam insulation from the HVAC box. This stuff crumbles up and gums up the electrical contacts.
To trouble shoot the fan, open the hood, open the fresh air cover, disconnect the leads from the fan, and then connect the fan directly to 12V. This will tell you if the fan is still operational. If it is, then you have a fault in the electrical circuit upstream of the fan itself, which is most likely the heater controls.
To clean the heater controls, it is best to remove the center console. Use a vacuum attachment to vacuum out all of the crud. Then use alcohol wipes or similar to thoroughly clean the metal surfaces on the controls, including the contacts on the slider arms. Make sure all of the wiring is intact. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Thanks fore the info. I might have stated it wrongly. It is not the passenger foot area it is behind the passenger seat. From about half way under the seat to the front of the back seat. _________________ I love gereatric rock. |

We're talking about the same area...I should have stated the rear passenger footwell. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

With regard to the heater fan motor in the 924. That's no longer available, I just replaced mine and used one that is available for the 911, Same motor onlty the shaft is 0.015 larger in diameter, a 1/8 inch longer (has no effect on the opperation), and not splined.
I turned down the shaft ( not a big deal. I ran the motor as it's own lathe and used a file, just make sure it's true by constant measuring)at 0.015 and bured up the shaft.
Then epoxyed the fan blade to the shaft. It may never come off again, but I'll never be around to care as long as the motor lasts as long as the first one did.
I posted the part number on another thread, if anyone wants the part number let me know and I'll look it up again. |

I'd be willing to bet that your wet carpet/floor is from the battery box leaking. The water runs down the front and under the carpet, gathering behind the front seat area, which is the lowest point in the floor.
Pull the battery and check all of the seam sealer. It dries out over time and shrinks, causing leakage whenever it rains, especially if the battery box drain is blocked/obstructed by leaves, twigs, dead insects and other debris. _________________ Race car: my favourite palindrome.

Far be it for me to disagree but (on euro cars) the 4 drain tubes are not connected, the 2 rears exit through the bottom of each trunk side compartment, the 2 fronts exit at the bottom of the windscreen pillar under the hood. Dribble some water down each of the 4 holes in the sunroof drain chanel and make sure it runs out of the other end. Gentle clearing with a bit of stiff fishing line might be required. _________________ 1984 n/a Ruby Red Metallic
