Yeah I know where that one is...on a 77.5 924, I'm looking for the other marker that is found by the oil pump(?). It's a line with the letter OT or something

I believe it should be a notch in the edge of the pulley that drives the water pump/alternator.

The correct mark to look for is on the flywheel. There's a little hole in the bellhousing that is there for you to look at the timing mark on the flywheel.

As mentioned above, it's below the brake booster on the bell housing.

The problem with this though is that often people who work on these cars before we buy them are clueless, and put the flywheels back on in the wrong orientation, so the timing mark is useless. As the front pulley is keyed, it's impossible to put that back together wrong.

Given that cam timing is adjustable only in increments of teeth, the oil pump mark will get you close enough. If your flywheel is still on properly, then that's another good mark to use.

Strangely enough, after correcting the oil pump crank to TDC in-line with the cam flywheel and rotor, the car refused to start and upon rechecking TDC, noticed the crank has moved a few teeth (!?). Corrected TDC and again the crank gets off (see photo). Is this common?

And my thinking is that since the car started prior to correction, albeit poorly, I'm assuming spark, air and fuel should not be issues. These components worked before recent fiddling.

After correcting TDC, symptoms of turning the key are 1)car turns over but does not start 2) there is a chugging feel

With the pointer on the back side dot on the cam gear (like the picture above), post a couple of pictures of the front of the cam gear. Also verify that the number one plug wire is above the rotor.

Did you take the engine pulley off at any time during this adventure? If so did you reinstall the key?

Didn't take off the flywheel, only the cam cover. Plug#1 is directly above the rotor, with all plugs set correctly.

Not sure if having TDC off by a few teeth (cam and crank aren't perfect) should prevent the car from starting all together...

After turning the key to start the first time, there is a chug followed by what feels like a building of pressure that stops the car from chugging further, and I quickly remove the key...

Update! Found the marker inside the clutch housing. Turns out my crank flywheel marker wasn't the right one. Upon aligning the cam, car actually starts with low idle again, and the timing gets off a few teeth after running. I'm going to rotate the cam flywheel 360 degrees after re-aligning to make sure it's on the right stroke.

Should I try adjusting the idle or is that a symptom of off timing?
