Has anyone looked at installing an electric power steering unit in their 924. My daughter is complaining that her n/a has very heavy steering (something to do with it running 205/50 x 14 tires on the front I suppose).
I looked at a power steer unit out of a 944, but was put off by the cost from the wreckers. I have been told I could buy an after market electric unit out of the US, hence the question whether any of you guys have looked at this or done it? _________________ Remember a Porsche is not just for Christmas,

I'd be surprised if you couldn't source a 924S or 944 unit very cheap (relatively speaking) from the U.S. but I'm not at all sure it'd fit, being L.H.D.
That being said, there are R.H.D. 924S's and 944's in the U.K. and prices over there don't seem much higher than here in North America (sometimes a little cheaper, I reckon). Perhaps you could get one from over there?
I guess shipping might be a killer, as usual. Just thought I'd throw the idea out there... _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

Just about every new sportscar on the planet now comes with speed sensitive power steering. In a car park you can spin the wheel with your little finger but on the highway it reverts back to almost standard rack and pinion steering like your 924. Had it on my Mazdaspeed Miata and it was,in a word, awsome. _________________ 1979 Euro 931, Olive

Made two of these base column is from a vauxhaul (gm) corsa C, The first one has been on one of the 924's for a couple of years without any issues, i've kept the level of assistance manually adjustable for now making it speed sensitive is not hard just not required on a light 924.
Not hard to make just need to be safe when dealing with steering, welding, pinning and reiforcing the steering shafts and making a couple of mounting brackets and it fits under the dash ok (very tight)
Hard to see with all the wiring but its in there _________________ Porsche 924 na

Steve Bassington was also experimenting with an electric power steering setup, might do some searches on "bass gt" as the author... _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Here's the thread with a pic of it mounted, but sadly, I don't think there's much detail about the unit he was using.

I thought I had some emails on the subject, but haven't uncovered them yet... _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Just dug back thru some emails. Steve mentioned a Merc A-class unit that might be a good candidate, and in my own searches, at one point I had zeroed in on the electro-hydraulic setup out of a 1991-1995 Toyota MR2. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |
