This is something I would like to know as well. I would make the assumption it only comes on if the lights are up - aka in parking light or regular lights on position - and I wonder if there is some way it senses that the hood is up? Perhaps a mercury switch? _________________ 1977 Porsche 924 - sold

Looking at page 246 of the Hayne's manual at the wiring diagrams for the '77 - '78, it appears as though the underhood light comes on with the parking lights. _________________ 78 924 NA

I think I know why that is mentioned. The under-hood light is indeed linked to the parking lights. But if the ignition is off, you can turn on half your parking lights by moving the blinker stalk (move it the other way for the other side). This is a German Car Thing. The idea is if you park on a road without street lights, you turn on the road-side ones so people can see you. Since the under-hood light is linked to the left parking light, it will come on, too.

< Hood up / Closed loop / Engine compartment illuminated.
< Closed hood \ Loop open \ No light.
Feed: L29, Engine Compartment Light, Current track 29 (?!)
BUT… It's the first line in here #21
and gets the Voltage dosis from A9, that would be your
Left parking light and/or US Front side marker light
switched ON.

Probably. But I've only ever seen it on German cars.

Nope.
Mine's busted. I've never bothered to even investigate it.
I also haven't bothered to look at the wiring diagram for my year. Things change from year to year, and I have no idea if that's one of them. _________________ 78 924 NA

Is this a great board or what? Put my underhood light on, didn't work, looked for a switch, no luck. Searched the Googles, this came up. Not sure if it is crazy or brilliant, but I guess better than running the battery down if you leave the hood up a day or two. Mine works, but it takes a tap or two, assume that's is the mercury switch, I scuffed up all the contacts on the bulb.
Know I am reviving an old thread, but maybe it will solve a mystery for someone else too. _________________ 88 924S

there is an inline mercury switch behind the bulb. the power is fed from the sidelights-maybee different on cars with the steering wheel on the wrong side-then the mercury swich is an in line bulb for turning it on and off when you open the bonnet. its probably a dirty connection there. _________________ I KNEW white wall tyres were invented by Americans .....just not at Boeing.... to be fitted on the 737..... |
