I have a 76 with a 5 speed ( I know it should be a 4 speed) Regardless I have been driving it over the past few weeks with the 327 Chevy transplant and I tired of my ratio selection that the stock transaxel provides. With that much power and torque I am through the gears and up to the speed limit in 5 seconds....once on the highway it is nuts turning a sbc @ 3000 rpm's It would be fine turning 1000 rpm.

What are my options? I know some of the swappers have put 968 trannies..but I don't know the final drive ratios.

BTW haven't been around here much...had my nose to the grind during my first year of BsRN (Nursing) Kept a 3.80 GPA

Nice to See you post... I hear the 931 tranny the G31 is a good bet,
if you can find one so maybe ited be better to go after a 44 unit so you can get the whole thing torque tube, carrier and tranny, if its drive ratios your after and you know what your looking for I dont know maybe someone does though. Got the shades goin want a chocolate.

Yeah I am looking on the 944 hybrids site. They swap the 5th gear from the early trannies. But they are all dealing with 944 or 951 gear.

For now I will just stay off the freeway

Your car looks good Joe..post a link to the pictures.

Doesn't the 951 trans have a taller gear set? That would at least put you around <2500 at the very least...

The 968 box requires modifications to the rear trans mount area IIRC.

968 excluded, I think the tallest final drive ratio you will find is in the early 944 trannys. They were geared to be economical, if they actually had the power to push it they had a theoretical top speed of over 160. I have a ratio chart... somewhere...

... if I locate it before someone else posts the info, I will post.

Well my buddy's 951 does 60 in 2nd gear and 95(?) In 3rd which IMO are pretty tall gears compared to the 924/931. 3rd gear in my 931 goes to like 86 MPH.

Info can be found here http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/trans-04.htm

The tall final drive gearing I am talking about is 37:27. I have only encountered it in pre 85 944s, in fact in every one I have owned, but it appears that it was in some of the later ones as well. The 951 has a final drive of 35:29.

I found the 37:27 gear for sale on the 944 hybrids site for $80.00 shipped. I just need to figure out what transmissions it fits before i go too far. No chance it will fit it my Audi box?????
