I´ve bought a 16V 2,0l ACE engine from an Audi A6 1997. The same year this particular car had 4,5,6 and 8-cylinder engines connected to the same gearboxes . Since the 5-cyl 20vT AAN is the more common transplant, i opted for something else.

The plan was to fit my modified large intake AEB 1,8t 20V head and turbocharge it for some serious power. The 2,0l engine is more than 2" shorter than the 924 block and lighter (a shortbock with crank, rods, pistons and sump was easy to lift and walk around with). I even think it is lower by an inch or two. Connected to a 931 bellhousing it would be a dream comming true.

Well, it did not happen. The boltpattern is close, but not close enough. Read about the 034 motorsport adapter, but that is for VR6 only as I understand. Since I have to fabricate a new housing, motorstands and everything else I could easiliy find a better engine to start with The reason for an easy bellhousingsolution is 100% alignment from crank, clutch, transaxle to the gearbox - it must be absolutely straight and centered.

According to ETKA did Audi 100 77´-79´ have the 924 engine and the narrow bore 5-cylinder connected to the same engine. Enginecode for the 924 engine is WA or WF.

Maybe I´ll read everything about the Audi 5-cyl transplant again and give it a second chance, maybe...

Not much to show actually - it doesn´t fit.

Old Audis used the 016 gearbox for the 5 inline. From 1988 was this gearbox replaced with 01A with dual pattern for 4,5,6 and 8 cylinder engines. The V6 and V8 share the same bellhouse bolt pattern as the I5. All 4 cylinder has got a uniqe bolt pattern. The workshop manual frpm Bentley clearly show this. One solution could be to cut and weld an Audi trans perhaps.

The V6 is heavy and the 3,6 V8 use the same head as the 1,8-2,0 16V. Well not exaclty the same as they were better and used in 4-cyl racecars. The larger 4,2 share the same block but with off-center bore, imagine how the heads look

It ain´t over yet...

Looking for a VW gearbox and will make an adapter. Not sure if it is the 02A or 02J box, but guessing it is the later one.

Man, you swedes really get cooking during garage season! That is a compliment. some of the coolest customized sports cars i have ever seen have come from sweden. including the absolute coolest; which of course was the 944 with the 20valve audi 5cyl running like 25 psi connected to a supra six speed box!!!!!!! AMAZING.
