They are strong enough as this is how the holbert 924 racer is currently set up. As soon as I can post pics of the car, I will let you guys see. Doc Bundy's car has a 16v 944 motor mounted is this fashion. That's where I got the idea. The steel cross-member is stronger than the alum unit just not as stiff. Fatigue could play in at 200k mi or so if you race everywhere you go. Vibration is the only downside. locktite all hardware!

Oysteinrb - that is the head temperature sensor.
There are 2 of them:
The one you circled is used by the Motronic - note the Bosch connector
The sensor 3 in ches behind it is ALSO a head temperature sensor, but this one is used only for guages.

Behind them at the same height between #2 and #3, you will see a heat shield.
This hides 2 threaded bosses. The rear one is used for the knock sensor on the later 951.
If you are to use 951 Motronic for your supercharger car, you will have knock sensing.

What do you mean when you say motronic? Is that the original ECU on the car, or are you thinking a replacement performance fuel injection system?

Oh, and thanks a LOT for the info!

I am going with MS2. I will attempt to go with sequential injection with a cam sensor, and a COPS ignition such as all the new engines have. I have read up on MS alot the past few months, and I plan to purchase one here shortly.

The MSII sounds like a good idea.

A little update on this saga, I've come up with the 968 engine and it will be delivered pretty soon, going to be using a 951 bellhousing and clutch assembly with my LSD G31.

I've sourced a 944 engine to use for mocking up and possibly for driving while the 968 engine receives some attention prior to swapping. The 944 engine is complete with crossmember and the fabricated bits of the unibody that it bolts to.

Project 924 S3 is back up and running

how is everyone going with their conversions?

im currently looking at a 944 engine for my '80 turbo. what would I need to fit it? will i have to get the '44 torque tube and transaxle? obviously i know i'll need to sort out steering and engine mount issues as previously mentioned.
awesome thread!

Are you saying the 944 crossmember won't suit the early 924 ?
surely the crossmembers are the same dimensions ?
