|
|
So i've been gearing up for my shift linkage bushing replacement and I finally finished it last night. The bushings that came out were practically non-existent and readily explained the slop in the shifter and once I installed the new bushings I could immediately feel a big difference. So I reinstalled EVERYTHING and a few hours later pulled the car out of the garage. To my immense disappointment the rear half of the floor is pretty much gone. Reverse, 2nd, and 4th engage like they never have before, but if feels like I can't quite make it into 1st, 3rd, and 5th. I was able to get it into 1st once but never again, and third and 5th are hit or miss but always a struggle.
Before I did the replacement all of these gears worked and could be found pretty easily. (Just very sloppy) Can anyone shed some light on this issue for me? I'm assuming the news is bad. IE I have to tear everything back out. I'm just so confused about where I went wrong? _________________ '79 Porsche 924

I am in the process of rebuilding the whole rear end of my car at the moment and have everything out including the gearbox and entire linkage, torsion carrier and fuel tank.
I had a bush missing on one side so it was really floppy!!!
I haven't replaced everything yet so i don't know if what i have done is correct but there appear to be some measurement and angles on the guide rod that are very exact. If you replaced the angular joint aswell as the linkage bushings you may not have got the dimensions correct.
Also did you dismantle the shifter aswell?
Also i assume you are referring to the dogleg box? _________________ 1978 NA 924 dogleg

to clear this up a bit more. I only replaced the linkage bushings and the small pink shifter bushings from inside the car. So I suppose that means that I dismantled the shifter. I didn't pull the entire torque tube out. I just removed the exhaust, cv joints and the transmission. As far as angles go I think I lined everything up as it was, but obviously I could be wrong. _________________ '79 Porsche 924

If you didn't remove the guide tube, then it can't be the angle/ length of it giving you problems as it worked before.
If the coupler is back together correctly it must be the shifter.
Could the two rod be in the wrong holes on the shifter? The guide rod goes in the bottom one and shift rod (the one with the coupler) goes in the top hole.
I don't know if they can be put in the wrong holes but if everything else is correct i can't think of anything else. Sorry _________________ 1978 NA 924 dogleg

I had the same problem in my first 924 (~15 years ago). I was able to correct it by pulling sharply up on the shifter - it appears that I had somehow knocked a ball and socket into a postion where they locked up. I know it sounds crazy, but for the time involved and the price give it a try! Wrap both hands around the shift rod (not the knob or you'll be wearing it!!) and pull straight up. Best of luck... _________________ 1967 912

speedster9110 if I could, I would gladly buy you a round or a case of whatever you like... I was pretty damn skeptical but I figured what the hey and gave it a shot... now she's shifting like new and I'm almost incapable of believing it...
but hey it's great so thank you very very much! You saved me a hell of a lot of wasted time. _________________ '79 Porsche 924
