Courtesy of 924-76, here is a fascinating article from the July 2006 issue of 911 & Porsche World on the 924 engine. Some interesting little tidbits in this article, including the continued perpetuation of the Dennet 2.4L myth* (click thumbnail for full article; use the picasa magnify feature to enlarge once you arrive at the image).

Engine Tech: Porsche 924
by Paul Davies
911 & Porsche World, July 2006

*See why the 2.4L claim is a myth and not fact.

I also have it as a high resolution PDF (28MB). Unfortunately, Google docs doesn't allow sharing of PDFs at the moment.

Interesting that there is no mention of the anguish we have been going through lately in terms of NLA parts.

Green tartan interior, you don't see that on a Civic.

Also interesting, in light of the main bearing group buy, that the thrust bearing was a different material than the plain bearings.

Is this the case with the new run?

I read the article and they mentioned that 931 tappets are lighter than NA's? Haven't seen anything different in those over the years, perhaps an error?

And it's weird that they recommend using carbs on a street car? First suggestion for truly more power would be EFI route that improves fuel mileage AND power, not to mention excellent starting at all temperatures and better driveability, which carbs definitely don't provide.

And last, of course, boosting the 924 engine as this is the only form that truly improves power output on NA engine because of the crappy port shape.

Yeah, I noted the info on the thrust bearing as well as the lifters. I'm not sure I believe either one, it's hard to say, as they don't cite a source for that info. The tappets I've seen from NAs and 931s all look identical, but of course, I've never had them on scales to compare...would certainly be interesting to find out. Regarding the thrust bearing, I don't think we have a contact at King to find out...

As for EFI, remember, this article was written in 2006. I don't know what the state of MS was at that point in history, but these guys were talking to old school guys, and it appears to me that was their only source of info for the article. Not exactly a shining journalistic example. It would certainly be interesting to have a more thorough and up-to-date article written...

Understood, but as I said, the author appears to have only interviewed one guy, who was an old school carb racer. Even in 2006, though, I'm wondering how many running examples there were worldwide of 924s running EFI??? Probably less than 20 or so...
