|
|
Sent the head off to be reconditioned, winter project, and I received a call from the machine shop yesterday. He reported that the valves are in pretty bad shape. I trust him as I he has done all of my machine work for the past 15 years and I have not had a single complaint! Anyway, he called to let me know that his suppliers prices for both exhaust and intake are steep $135 (US) exhaust and $145 (US) for intake! I have made a few calls and the best I can come with is a good set of used ones for $40 a piece. Right now, I'll take any opinions or places to call! Think I could get a government bailout?

Raceboy suggests SS ones, available on E-Bay for pretty cheap. Search for the thread and enjoy the surly, I mean spirited discussion. _________________ Toofah King Bad

| I've got a 931 head with a very deep gouge and lots of tiny pinholes. i've decided not to even bother getting checked out. The valves will be available. I need some help though....What specs do i need to check-out to determine if the valves are suitable for re-use/sale? |

The only thing that really could be worn is the seal 'edge' on the valve dish (hope I've got the correct terms). Those get dented sometimes or in some cases (lots of miles) they can form an edge which you can feel.
The valve stem doesn't wear really... would be the valve guide which wears out.
If you're lucky, the valves can be machined, but I'm not sure how well the sodium filled ones take that.
I'll soon find out
I've found valves at www.fvd.de
Just search on PET part number. 49 eur for exhaust, 79 for inlet.
plus approx. 20% vat _________________ "Rule: Turbo's make torque, and torque makes fun." (C. Bell)

I know I'm late, guys, but...
Cleaning out a box of 924 parts, I came up with a set of exhaust valves # 931.105.406.02 qty 4, and one 931.105.406.03 valve.
Can ship them out Flat rate small box mail
$ 30 ea obo + ship takes them.
Took some pictures just in case.

Would you stay with stock valve springs on a road/semi autocross car? _________________ 1980 Turbo

There's room for improvement from the stock springs, 10 to 15 more pounds of seat pressure will give you a safety factor from over-rev or a missed shift. Well built titanium retainers a plus.
A simple port cleanup without metal removal, just rounding rough edges with a 120 grit roll or just match porting intake sides goes a long way improving things as well..

It's been a long time , but i think some Chevy small block parts is what we used for it. Have to verify that before saying for sure.
