I'm not going to verify or endorse this. Draw your own conclusions.
Happy knuckle busting !
Machinist's Workshop magazine actually tested penetrants for break out torque on rusted nuts. Significant results! They are below, as forwarded by an ex-student and professional machinist, Bud Baker.
They arranged a subjective test of all the popular penetrants with the control being the torque required to remove the nut from a "scientifically rusted" environment.
>> *Penetrating oil ..... Average load*
>> None ..................... 516 pounds
>> WD-40 .................. 238 pounds
>> PB Blaster ............. 214 pounds
>> Liquid Wrench ..... 127 pounds
>> Kano Kroil ............ 106 pounds
>> ATF-Acetone mix....53 pounds
>>
>> The ATF-Acetone mix was a "home brew" mix of 50 - 50 automatic transmission fluid and acetone. Note the "home brew" was better than any commercial product in this one particular test. Our local machinist group mixed up a batch
>> and we all now use it with equally good results. Note also that "Liquid Wrench" is about as good as "Kroil" for about 20% of the price. |

Likewise, but I might try the Acetone/ATF for the fun of it. _________________ 78 924 NA

Hmmm... No comment on the effectiveness of foul language?
I'm gonna mix up some ATF and acetone! _________________ '84 944 - kid blew motor

It's another mix thing. . .you have to use bad language/shitty looks. Also tools have more torque after throwing them on the ground a couple of times and getting just a bit of blood on them. _________________ Toofah King Bad

I am working on a battery holddown nut right now maybe i will try some atf.
Heet is the best when you can use it without burning the whole car up.
Bad language usually results in broken studs. _________________ 77.5 project car have never driven. burgundy

Following up on the thread, diesel fuel oil was pointed out as being a very effective penetrating oil as well... _________________ Vaughan Scott

I used them all . I got one for you! If you can get to the frozen nuts& bolts try dripping hot candle wax on it & it works as good if not better. Hard to belive but this is a old school trick. I am from Missouri the "show me state" & it showed me!

I like the Kroil, or Mouse Milk.
Since we have lots of it at work, and are forced to observe the expiration dates, I usually end up with some that I am forced to remove from the workplace. Drat...

I like banging on stuck fasteners with a BFH.
Percussive maintenance.
If it jams, bang on it. If it breaks, it needed replacing anyway. |
