For my son's senior trip, we're going to be taking SONIC06 (the 81 NA) on a 4,000+ mile 10-day trip. Here's a quick look at the itinerary:- Fri 10 Apr: Plymouth MI to Louisville to Memphis to Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas
- Sat 11 Apr: Hot Springs to Dallas to Austin TX
- Sun 12 Apr: Austin to San Antonio to International Amistad Reservoir
- Mon 13 Apr: Big Bend Nat'l Park
- Tue 14 Apr: Big Bend Nat'l Park
- Wed 15 Apr: Big Bend to Fort Davis to Guadalupe Mountains Nat'l Park
- Thu 16 Apr: Carlsbad Caverns to Roswell NM to Amarillo TX
- Fri 17 Apr: Amarillo to Oklahoma City to Pawhuska OK
- Sat 18 Apr: Pawhuska OK to Ha Ha Tonka State Park to St. Louis MO
- Sun 19 Apr: St. Louis to Indianapolis to Plymouth MI
Hope to get lots of great photos in on the trip. Hoping even more that the car is up for the trip! I've been putting it through its paces the past couple of weeks, and so far, she's running great, drives solid, especially after replacing the worn steering shaft with a solid replacement, and also replacing the clutch cable with a brand new one.
I'll have a full complement of tools and spares along for the ride, but if there are any members along our route, I sure would appreciate having your email or phone numbers in case anything goes wrong. Please send me a PM if you'd be willing to help out if we run into trouble in your neck of the woods.
Here's a quick visual reference to the epic journey:

We will be splitting drive time. He needs more instruction on driving a manual, and more real world experience. Nothing like 10 solid days of one-on-one "daddy driving school" to start developing some good instincts! That's the thing I notice most about inexperienced drivers is the total and utter lack of instincts, knowing what to anticipate and when.
I took my eldest son with me to Cali when I picked up the 928. Same deal, 4000 miles in 10 days. By the time we got home, I was MUCH more comfortable letting him run loose on the streets! _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Hey,
I live about 45 mins from Dayton, if you run into any trouble there. I think Alex has you covered in Indy. _________________ 1978 924 NA

Yer gonna have to stop in Eureka Springs, AR! We were there this past november, PCA event the same week, and loved the town. Lots of twisty nice roads in the area too. Not out of the way to hot springs either. _________________ '83 944 Track car.

Not a problem for tulsa. I was just up in pawhuska a few weeks ago shooting a video. There is a great disc golf course at taylorranch in pawhuska.
The only hitch is I'm planning to attend a friends graduation in OKC on the 17th. I will email you my number.
I take it your going straight north from okc to pawhuska. Have you figured out which back road you plan to take? I might suggest hitting stillwater than to mannford than north. OSU has a sports museum in the IBA Gallagher and eskimo joes bar and grill is right within walking distance. Great burgers there. _________________ Bob Dodd - 924turbo@cox.net

Yeah, we're planning to do some "exploring for the two hours or so that we'll be in Roswell. I'll be sure to have the camera handy...maybe I'll be the one to get the million dollar photo of the real E.T.
Actually, back OT, I just realized, I'd like to add Memphis and Little Rock to the list...still have a few sizeable "holes" in my safety net, so if there are any other forum members in those areas, please let me know! _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |
