|
|
This week I contacted ARP's Specialty Products Department. I think we are very close to having a solution for custom replacement fasteners for stock 924 NA / 931 rod bolts. We are still working out details in terms of specifications and materials, but we're close enough now that I want to start the conversation regarding interest.
I already have enough interest for the minimum order of 40 pieces (5 sets). Based on preliminary estimates, the pricing is going to be around USD$250 per set. At an order of 80 pieces (10 sets), early indications are that pricing will drop to around USD$150 per set. I want to be clear: those figures could change slightly, as we are still working out precisely what material needs to be used to support up to 400 BHP.
Initial indications are that these will require a 7-8 week lead time.
If interested, please let me know how many sets you would like. Thanks! _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made

put me down for one set as well, provided interest is enough to hit the $150 or less quantity.
thanks for taking the lead on this, next we need main bearings... _________________ Eric

Well, we only need two more confirmed buyers to hit that mark, but I'm also still waiting on a response from the guys at ARP to confirm the pricing breakdown.
As for main bearings, I've pretty much exhausted every avenue I could find, and nobody wants to make 'em. And unfortunately, I stupidly posted all of the cross reference info in a WTB posting in the for sale forum, which has now expired, so we no longer have the cross reference info documented. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

I'd love to, but I don't expect to be building any more 924 motors... unless maybe the turbo? Yeah, OK then, that would make sense... What timeline for payment needed? _________________ Vaughan Scott

Vaughan, no specific timeline yet, but I'm definitely thinking to get the ball rolling on this by Thanksgiving. So probably payment within the next 4-6 weeks? _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Hmmm....tempting. I'll let you know if I can afford them in a couple of weeks. I've really started thinking about building a motor lately...probably not till next winter, but it wouldn't hurt to have these ahead of time. _________________ --Alex--

Crap. I'd love to have a set for the turbo, but busy spending all my money for now on the race... _________________ Vaughan Scott

Vaughan, if timing and cash flow are an issue, I'm sure we can work something out. I'm committed to at least one set at minimum order, so if we can get the price down to $150 with 10 orders, then I can cover you for a set until you're ready. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

In that case... yes! It's just the timing that sucks, the need/desire is definitely there! _________________ Vaughan Scott

Hey Guys ........ What is the thinking here. As we all know there are NO rod bolts available for the 924/931 from the factory or from anywhere else for that matter. Even Porsche recommends that the bolts be replaced at engine reconditioning time so what is everybody doing when they pull down their motors? Re-using old bolts - thats a potential time bomb in the bottom end. Of course the other alternative is to use aftermarket con rods, which now effectively doubles the cost of an engine replacement.
My thanks to Ideola for approaching ARP to commission new bolts. This is a one off and will not become a stock ARP item. To that end I've ordered four sets. Why? Because I have motors to rebuild and I want spares, and having searched the world for over 12 months now, I know that the only commercial rod bolt manufacturer in the world is ARP. Thats right! ALL of the various rod manufacturers simply buy in their bolts from ARP.
A once off deal to get replacements for the original, at a much higher spec is a no-brainer. Sure it aint cheap, but its not dearer than Porsche would charge if they had any. And in my case, I'd rather put off the engine build for another 6 months so that I can purchase these little suckers, as I've already had the heartbreak of a con rod bolt failure destroy a block and head.
Just my opinion of course, but I call it insurance.
Cheers Pete |

Peter's right.
Is a second group by possible at a later date?
Can this company be approached with the same specifications in 2009 and another group buy, with comparable numbers of interested 924 owners, arranged? _________________ 1980 924 turbo, MSD, Meth. Inj, otherwise stock. |

I presume the ARP units would be reusable?
Have you considered approaching one of our favorite vendors to bankroll part of this? _________________ Toofah King Bad
