This is just the beginnings of my EFI conversion. I've been planning and accumulating all the bits over the last few months - and today marks the start of the real work.

I'll be installing a MSII, with an LC-1 - nothing very special really - dead standard I guess... but it's my first attempt so should be an interesting learning exercise!

The plan is to use a Weber Redline "big throat" throttle body - that's if I can manage to make it fit. With the standard NA manifold there ain't enough room, so I've got a SII manifold from a 931 which has longer runners, which hopefully will give me enough room to move. The measurements I've done show it will be close, but I won't really know til I get in there... and that brings us to todays efforts...

The engine bay as it was today:

And then after a couple of hours of busting knuckles on bolts that haven't moved in 20 years...

Jesus, what have I done...!

I don't get alot of time for playing, so this will take a while to get sorted.

Oh, and if you need anything that I've removed let me know! I'll try catalog it and post it up to the FS section.

Advice and encouragement will be highly appreciated.

Cheers,
Gavin.

Go, Gavin, GO!!!
Make sure you takes LOTS of pics so you have a good before-and-after story to enjoy for years to come

Are you just doing EFI at this point, or will you be tackling ignition as well? I see you already have an MSD unit...

Yup, lots of pics is mandatory!

Just EFI at this stage, and then ignition down the track - unless someone can convince me I should do it all now. I've not done any reading on ignition mods thus far - would I be junking my MSD?

Great start there Gav.
Sure you won`t be going back.

Looks cleaner, spacious and more modern without the CIS IMO. You also must have noticed how much weight you`ll be saving too.

Personally don`t believe there is much to be gained by changing the dizzy ignition to EDIS as it is now outdated and adds extra complexity and fault potential. MSD can easily be connected to MS as can the VR dizzy input and that is all you will need. I know you will be completely happy. Perhaps at a later stage you could go to COP if desired but for a NA the difference would be more cosmetic than performance.

Anyway, great effort so far. Keep at it and show us pics of your progress.

Having converted from a MSD over to EDIS I disagree with you strongly RC
however, I would recommend doing one thing at a time, don't muck with the ignition until you get the EFI tuned. KISS rule.

I think the biggest advantage of EDIS over the stock distributor is full control of the spark curve.

I actually pulled the J shaped one yesterday and gave it a rattle-can shower...

Might look into powder-coating though - good idea.

All I had left was chrome or red, so chrome is what I used.

I disagree with some of the coments,

do the lot. tear everything out cap off the hole for the distributor and convert to EDIS at the SAME TIME. get and use a 36-1 timing ring and have the EDIS compute the signal right from the get go.

I would not go with COP for a NA 924 due to the location, that puts the coils right off the exhaust, with nothing for you to put there to support them really, and alot of extra heat. Plus the EDIS coils are much larger coils.

There are quite a few good reasons to only do one at a time. First, if you have problems, you can simply troubleshoot one item. A good example is flosho, he converted both at the same time, had major problems with his ignition, if he had just converted fuel first, he could have had that all sorted and knew it was a ignition system problem when he got it setup. You can get just as good a signal for megasquirt from your MSD unit as you can from a EDIS so, what lizard says regarding signal is pretty much irrelevant. In flosho's case it took quite a long time ,and quite a bit of instant messaging between myself and him before he got it figured out.

Raceboy ran COP on his NA, and if you worried about heat, use CNP (coil near plug) instead. Get COP's that are designed to deal with the heat.

I'd also like to note that I converted my ignition over to EDIS first, and then did a full EFI swap afterwords. I had quite a few problems getting my EDIS sorted out (wiring issues, etc) I was very glad I followed the advice given regularly on the megasquirt forums, do one, then do the other.
