Hey all-
I was puttin along the highway at about 85mph in my toofah and passed this 944 convertible. After I realized what it was, I slowed down along side him to check it out. I yelled across the lane asking what year it was and it was a 1991. Looked like a pretty sweet ride. After he gave me the thumbs up to my ride, he took off like a bat out of hell. I was keeping up with him doing about 90-95mph for about 3 miles and then he goosed it and left me like I was tied to a stump! Damn fast car!! Are they rare? Expensive?

Here's a pic from my phone while we were driving.

Rare? Compared to the total number of 944's produced, sure, they're rare. I have seen one or two about town up here in Vancouver. Used to see the odd one back home in Oz, too.

Expensive? Who can say..? I know they were, relatively speaking, much more expensive than the base 944 when they were new. I doubt they'd command a huge premium over a comparable 944 these days, though. As with all these cars, condition would be all-important. If it's mint, it'd be a worth a few bucks, sure.

I know they made Turbo Cabrio's. But I have read that they weren't imported into the 'States?

Oh, by the way, Wikipeadia says there were 2,402 made for the U.S. Not many, considering it also says there were over 80,000 other 944's brought to the 'States...

I'm pretty sure that all converts are either turbos or S2's. (Probably explains why ran like a bat outta hell)

Yeah I've read that convertible 944's were S models (or S2). That's more pick-up than a standard 944 and much more than an early model 924N/A. I didn't think they were overly rare, though. From the numbers I saw, the 944 convertible was about as rare as 924S's. Those are just numbers, though, and they could be wrong. That said, I've seen two of the cabrio's around here and no other 924's than mine.

the convertible was an S2 very very few 944 turbos were soft tops , maybe 50 or so would need to check production. Anyway the 1991 was the last year , more soft tops than coupes were brought over if I remember right . Very nice ones with medium miles 70 to 100k run from 5500 to 12000 us . Lt has a nice one triple black 1991 and it runs very well , 208 hp , tons of torque , but it does not run quite as well as his 89 coupe s2 with 130 k miles , guess the flow of air makes a difference , Jesse

ALL Cabriolets are either S2's or Turbos. There are regular 944's or 924's that have Bieber cabrio kit, but factory only made S2 or Turbos.
About 500 Turbo Cabriolets produced total and they are quite expensive. I've driven one, my friend used to have it.

S2 Cabriolets are not very rare, even we had few of them in Estonia.
