I think I'll go with these instead of re-using the stock head studs(since one is sorta-stripped anyways)... _________________ [This Space For Rent] |

Trust me, you wont regret it. If you want to run decent boost reliably, O ringing the block and a set of these s the way to go.

Well, how about stock head gasket, no o-ringing and a set of ARP studs? _________________ [This Space For Rent] |

You don't o-ring the head, you o-ring the block. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Actually engine builders have done both, just trying to learn why. _________________ Toofah King Bad

Right, I am aware of that, it is common practice to o-ring the block, or the head, or both. However, what I was told in my investigations into this was that the soft aluminum in the head made it marginally useful to o-ring it. For the moderate boost levels most of us hope to achieve (even up to 21-25 psi is considered moderate), the advice I was given is that o-ringing the iron block is plenty sufficient, with no worries about FUBARing the head. If you were looking to do something really crazy like some of the 30+ psi boost monsters, it might be a different story. Two local respected engine builders confirmed this to me independently (Booth-Aarons and Holbrook). Steve also recommended this approach as that is what he is doing in his car. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

So is it worth doing for 12-15 PSI. . . _________________ Toofah King Bad

It add's reliability imo. I would do it on any turbo car, regardless if its 4psi or 20psi.

guy's,
If the block is out of the car, O ringing is a no brainer. you don't even need to use wire filler, as the groove itself will cause the metal fire ring on the head gasket to deform and create a better seal.
What we really need though is a decent head gaket. I have blown a few now, and it seems to be the Achilles heel. What would it take to get a company to run off a single production run? Other than the head gasket, these motors are pretty bomb proof.

When I last checked on this, Cometic wanted a run of like 250 units to make an MLS gasket. MLS would be the way to go, as I've heard nothing but sealing problems with copper, and I'm too chicken to test my motor on the Lubbock composite gasket. I seriously doubt that we'll be able to come up with enough guys to do an MLS, and I don't know of any other sources than Cometic.
It might be worth asking again, however. When I was working with Diamond, they didn't care how many different designs of pistons were run, as long as there was a minimum of 20 pistons. That was one of the ways we saved a little money on our custom slugs, and there were at least 3 different designs as I recall (custom 931, custom high compression NA, and custom 944). Maybe the same thing would be true for Cometic...if so, perhaps we could reach out to some of our 944 and 928 brethren, or even to a couple of the suppliers like EBS and Lindsey, and get them to pony up... 250 units still seems like a long shot. Let me know if you want to run with this. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Nick also looked into this...his results were similar to mine:
-nick wrote: | Ok, out of curiousity I called back asking for more details. They would want an order of 150, which would ballpark at $85-$150 each (probably on the lower end), and would be a 3 month turn-around.
All in all, I don't see it happening. |

Yeah buddy! FWIW, Summit is running a special this month, $30 off a purchase of $100 or more thru the end of July. I have a coupon that I received thru the mail at home, so it might be worth calling and asking if they can honor that via telephone orders, if anyone else is planning to order a set of these. I'll be placing my order next week. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |
