Posted: Sat Jun 07, 2008 10:53 pm Post subject: Oil Cooler, where to place? |
|
|
I have just bought a second hand oil cooler, don't know what it's from, but it slipped out of my hands a sec after I handed the money..
nothing seriously...but anyway...
I've popped the hood to see where I could fit it nice... of course I want to give it some fresh air, but the only place would be where my coolant radiator is.
So, what's the smartest thing to do... fit it in front of the coolant rad, or behind it?
I guess in front is better... oil is more important than coolant and the coolant has a huuuuuuge surface to cool.
The downside is that the part where the oil cooler is, will heat up my coolant instead of cooling it down...
If I place the oilcooler behind the coolant rad, I have the same sort of problem... the coolant will be 60C, oil 80+ which gives a rather small temp difference and cools my oil less...
Any empiricists who can help me out?
size of the oil cooler is about 25cm by 15cm
Side question... my splitter sends all oil through the cooler when above 80C, so if my oil lines are too slim, I can get problems right?
Any standard sizes to use? _________________ "Rule: Turbo's make torque, and torque makes fun." (C. Bell)

I put one to the side under the headlight behind the bumper.

Indeed, you need to get more creative with placement - mine is off to the side, behind the horns. It gets decent airflow there, enough to do the job. _________________ Vaughan Scott

Yes - it's an 8.5x11" plate-style cooler, screw-in fittings (not barbs). Cost is around $60-70USD, sold by B+M as a trans cooler.
VERY durable; you might be concerned about the apparent location, but it's actually hanging below the frame rail, below the headlight motor, and in fact I've put it into a few walls and gravel traps without damage. Much more durable than the tube and fin style! _________________ Vaughan Scott

Here's a question, if I wanted to install an oil cooler on an NA, but not relocate the oil filter, is there a shorter oil filter that can be used so clearance with the header isn't an issue? _________________ 1987 951 - M193 Version for Japan |

Hey, excellent thanks! I've been thinking of adding an oil cooler, just can't bothered moving the oil filter. I've got the 931 valance so I've got a spot all picked out for the cooler. _________________ 1987 951 - M193 Version for Japan |

have had a look under the hood, but I still can't find a decent place. In front of the wheels (beneath windscreen washer fluid container thingy) won't work in my case.
I've got some sort of strange front spoiler.
I'm quite sure there are shorter filters, don't know what consequences that has... shorter replacing intervals, but also less adequate flow through the filter?
What happens if I put it in front of my coolant radiator?... or will I be the first?
Ever had a look under the hood of a mercedes benz ML series? they've got a nice array of coolers in front... I guess it's about 7... and behind all that there's a coolant radiator... hehehe...
so if the 924 radiator isn't undersized, I guess it won't be a problem to mount the oil cooler in front of it...
and if it doesn't work out, I can always re-place the oilcooler... if I keep the lines in mind... _________________ "Rule: Turbo's make torque, and torque makes fun." (C. Bell)

Not a problem - that's the more commonly chosen location for them. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."

That's where I put mine on the NA, and afterward, I experienced a 20-30° drop in oil temps, and the coolant temp gauge rarely if ever passes the first tick. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

or you can find a euro 90 deg oil filter adaptor as these came stock so there was no interferance with the steering column. you could use a larger filter and a sandwich plate and still clear the crossmember.

Whatever you buy, make sure it has threaded fittings and not hose barbs. _________________ 1987 951 - M193 Version for Japan |
