My diff has considerable slack in it.
As a result, on acceleration there is a large thud
as engagement occurs and on deceleration/engine
braking engagement I get a similar thud.
The haynes manual says that if one needs to
reshim the diff, special tools are required.
Any advice. I may need to replace some bearings
aswell, is gearbox rebuild difficult?
Thank You
JT

Yes and Yes. It is rather likely that the wear is in the bearing immediately behind the pinion gear. And also that upon dismantling you will find it prudent to replace all the bearings and perhaps other bits. Either box requires the use of a press to strip and rebuild the shafts.
