I've been reading up that it's possible to swap the Audi V8 Torsen limited slip rear diff. Into a Front wheel drive Audi 016, by just hogging out the covers for the larger diff end cap.

When things get into the green again for me, or I find a Audi V8 at the local pick and pull with the rear diff still intact... I'm going to try the swap.

Torsen from audi v8 rear axle

I turned one side off it down from 45mm to 41mm instead off making the bearing hole in the cover larger.

audi v8 torsen at left and porsche open diff at right.

The driveflages from audi must be used because they are longer and have longer splines, they then have to be adapted to porsche CV joints.

This setup works really nice! and is cheap (paid 100euro for a used audi axle)

what were the mods to fit the CV joints?

Ooooo! So Cool!! I gotta keep an eye out for one of these buggers. Nice job! I personally see no reason to heat treat what you have done. Maybe if your drag racing with slicks? Cool to see someone followed up on Moone924's lead. I wont be hesitant to do the same now. Thanks!

So what does it take to adapt the CV flanges?

Todd

I wonder if a rear Torsen diff from Audi S6 Plus is the same as on V8? I mean the engines are almost identical and regular S6 didn't have Torsen rear....

My friend has one for parts, I'll get to know it in a few days.

Weld up the old holes i flange and then a small disc is made and welded to the flange (just 3mm wide so no change of driveshaft lenght is needed).
redrill and tap holes to porsche pattern and you are all set.

This setup is really nice and cheap!

I got a Torsen from the rear diff and I'm going to install it into 944 S2 gearbox soon, all the information and pics to come.

So how would the driving characteristics be different using the TORSEN diff vs. the stock Porsche G31 LSD???

Dan,

I can answer this as i have a Quaife ATB in my car. The first thing you notice is there is no push into corners, as Torsen diffs don't lock under deceleration. Compared to my GT3 this is really noticable. For track work, this is not so ideal, as it doesn't allow you to push really deep into corners.
secondly, if you lift a wheel, the diff goes open, so you have no LSD effect. again, for a road car this is fine, but less than ideal on a race car.
Finally, there is a slight but noticable shuffling across the rear axle as the Torsen loads up. Again, not an issue for a road car, but quite disconcerting on track.
So for a road/trackday car, i think the Torsen/Quaife is fine, but for a dedicated racer, it doesn't meet the mark. This is why i will be selling mine on and fitting a ZF type from Guard Transmissions in the US with 40/60 ramp angles into my 6 speed box.
See here for further info. Well worth a read http://www.guardtransmission.com/velocity.htm

Steve

Yep, for those exact reasons I bought that Torsen for my white 924 street-car. For racecar, clutch-type LSD is the only viable option.
