I ordered my cam from Steve @ Integral on Fri 04 Apr. After a brief discussion about my build, he confirmed that the Stage I for Turbo would be good for my project. Two weeks to the day the brand spanking new cam is on my doorstep. Now THAT's service! Thanks Steve!
Here's the pix:
Porsche 924 Stage I Turbo Cam
Seat duration*: 268° / 260°
.050" duration**: 232° / 225°
Gross cam lift: .500" / .478"
Hot valve lash: .015" / .015"
Net valve lift: .485" / .463"
* with .015" hot valve lash
** with zero valve lash
Lobe separation angle = 112°
At .015" hot lash:
Intake opens 22.0° BTDC
Full intake lift at 112° ATDC
Intake closes 66.0° ABDC
At .015" hot lash:
Exhaust opens 62.0° BBDC
Full exhaust lift at 112° BTDC
Exhaust closes 18.0° ATDC
Max. RPM = 6500 with stock valve springs at sotck installed heights with stock lifters
Intake : Outer Spring : Inner Spring : Total
Valve open : 50.5 lbf @ 1.667" : 11.5 lbf @ 1.555" : 62.0 lbf
Valve closed: 196.1 lbf @ 1.182" : 36.8 lbf @ 1.070" : 232.9 lbf
Exhaust : Outer Spring : Inner Spring : Total
Valve open : 50.5 lbf @ 1.667" : 11.5 lbf @ 1.555" : 62.0 lbf
Valve closed: 188.2 lbf @ 1.204" : 35.4 lbf @ 1.092" : 181.6 lbf
Set the initial cold valve lash at .011" intake / .011" exhaust. After the initial break-in period is over (see below), check the hot valve lash. Allow the motoro to cool down and then adjust the cold lash by your measured cold-to-hot delta so that the valve lash will grow to .015" when the engine is hot. It is the hot valve lash that really matters.
Break-in the new cam at 2000 RPM or slight higher for 20 minutes continuously after the motor is first started with the new cam. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made

Seems a shame to get oil all over that nice part. _________________ 1987 951 - M193 Version for Japan |

Rasta I've read a couple of your latest posts, and I've come to the conclusion...(inhale)... that you're...(inhale)...feeling pretty good...(inhale)
But I gotta admit, I agree, that cam only gets better covered with oil.

Ideola that's excellent - so will that sort of wind up and give you more power at higher RPM or how's it expected to behave? I haven't followed any threads you might have had. _________________ 1980 924 turbo, MSD, Meth. Inj, otherwise stock. |

It was Roger's thread on Integral Cams that convinced me to go this route. Be sure to read all four pages...aside from a brief distraction on how to type in the ° symbol, the thread has a lot of good info specific to cam selection for forced induction. Excerpted from a quote in that thread:
Steve Greunwald @ Integral Cams wrote: | The improved stock cam is designed to be a modern design upgrade to the stock cam so it would be a good pick especially if you want the most low end torque. I would recommend grinding it with 112 lobe seperation. Generally, you want less overlap with a forced induction application because there is less blow through at TDC and you get a gain at every rpm. I think going to 114 lobe separation will probably be a little too much because the intake valve will close later and this will shift the power band up which isn't what you want. |
As for winding up, the lightened solid lifters that are on order from Piper, along with the other valve-train lightening that will be performed during the head rebuild, should all combine for a very fast revving engine. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

112? 114?
You'll have to tell us how it turns out... |

112 is standard on their stage I cam (see the specs in my original post). _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Are you going to use moly as a start up lube when you install it? What breakin instructions did they provide? Don't mean to take you to a bad place but recall the earlier discussions on oils and how the new formulations mess with flat tappet cam setups -- be sure you're running the right oil. It would be a terrible shame to lose that schweet looking thing in the first few hundred miles... |

Judging by how mine is performing, I`m confident you`ll be very happy with it Dan. Have done over 5000 Ks on it now with no measurable wear. Rechecked clearances at around 500 miles and again recently with most requiring no adjustment, bar 1 or 2 that were initially 0.016". Since the stock type tapered screws moves 2 thou /turn, set it slightly loose rather than tight. Integral`s initial 11 thou cold clearance is spot on as it does grow to 15 when hot and the head expands.
I have only run NA with it and am impressed at the low and mid range torque developed, as well as improvement up top as well compared to stock. 7K is no problem at all and that is where the rev limit is now set after I was pulling 7.2 - 7.3 too easy and had good power there, on hills that would cause revs and power to drop if I changed up.
To be fair however, the cam was fitted at the same time as the EFI and I cant quantify the individual performance gains. With the restrictive CIS gone the increased flow has helped the top end and also the driveability in the low/mid area. Together the overall result is little short of amazing!
Notice your specs are the same on the exhaust with 7 deg and 0.022" lift more on the inlet. Should help you to jam a little more gas in the cylinder for some extra power. Keen to hear how yours goes Dan as you may get it running before I get my blower on since I am just too busy at the moment.
Would recommend using a molly cam lube on installation. Definitely wont hurt. Don`t turn it over much if you can help it before firing up and keep the revs up to move the oil, as per the instructions.

Eric, I posted the break-in instructions in the initial post of this thread...it's toward the bottom of the post underneath all of the specifications... _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

ideola would this be a good cam to use with ITBs that use bike carbs and eventually a supercharger? I'm very interested how this cam would work as a NA cam for a year or so before i could afford to supercharge my car. _________________ 1979 924 stocker soon to be autocross beast |
