Well after this thread here:
http://www.924board.org/viewtopic.php?t=25316
I admitted to myself that venting my crankcase to atmosphere, while definitely cleaner in terms of intake air, is still not optimal. It was sort of lazy on my part, I knew there was a better solution but just couldn't be bothered until Rasta planted the seed.
So to get the best of both worlds, no crap going back into the intake air while maintaining crankcase vacuum, I ordered one of these:

Couldn't you have just opened up a stock 931 separator and filled it with wire mesh? It even comes with a drain back to the oil pan _________________ 1980 931S

personally I'm going to try and find another way to make crank case vacuum(vacuum pump of some nature). But looks like a nice piece of gear chrenan.

I'll report back on how it works out, and what kind of deposits I end up seeing in the intake tract. Won't have it for a while as I was too cheap to pay for fast shipping. _________________ 1987 951 - M193 Version for Japan |

Iquiring minds want to know....do the 924's not use a pcv system to vent the crankcase or are they the old style breather type?pcv vacuum controled....breather is just an open vent system. _________________ Doco "where am i going and why am i in this handbasket"author unknown

There is no PCV valve, but I don't think one is required to characterize our system as "positive crankcase ventilation." The case doesn't just vent, it is actively evacuated by draw from the air filter.
Could be wrong of course! _________________ Toofah King Bad

ok similar system to the old cars that used a dump tube, and the air passed by it and made a vacuum that drew out the unwanted pressures.so what does the evacuated air pressures mixed with oil go to on these cars...must be that little plate on the side of the block with the mesh in it that everyone wants to clean.guess ya could run adump tube. ....but you would be doin yer part for the nviroment!! _________________ Doco "where am i going and why am i in this handbasket"author unknown

Dont forget without a PCV you need a restrictor in the breather pipe _________________ Porsche 924 1984 (UK import) NA

Is there any adverse affects of running just a catch can where the 931 air/oil separator usually is? I've been running without the line that normally went to the air box(which apparently means that it was just a breather system, not the evacuation system).
Chrenen, where did you purchase that catch can from? _________________ [This Space For Rent] |

Speaking of sucking, while I would not necessarily advocate something like this for a pure street car, there is another solution for improving crankcase vacuum. Check out the racing vacuum pumps from GZ Motorsports. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Sorry to tell you this Chrenan,
That is not going to really work all that well.
it will work ok of you take off that drain valve and put a pump on the bottom to pull the fluid out of there and pump it back into the crank case.
But even doing this will not give you any vacuum inside the crankcase. _________________ 3 928s, |

How do you figure that? Too constricted or something? _________________ Toofah King Bad
