I have my tranny out right now, and got to thinking it might be a nice time to upgrade my gear oil. I have been avoiding putting Mobil 1 in for a long time because I heard that it attacked bronze syncros. Is this unfounded crap, or is there some substance to the fear??

Don't know about Mobil 1, but I've tried AMSOil was not too happy with it as the shifts were not very smooth. Switched to PCA recommended Swepco 201 and wow.........what a difference. Been running it ever since. http://www.allzim.com/cgi/sh000001.pl?REFPAGE=http%3a%2f%2fwww%2eallzim%2ecom%2facatalog%2findex%2ehtml&WD=swepco&PN=copy_of_SWEPCO_201__GL5_gear_lube_80w90__1_gallon%2ehtml%23a1_21201G#a1_21201G

Not sure about Porsche trannys, but in the Supra scene...everybody uses and swears by Redline MT-90 gear oil. Apparently it is one of the best, and has been known to greatly improve the feel of the tranny, especially if the synchros are worn. I don't have any firsthand experience with the redline oil, but if 100+ people are saying good things about it, then there must be something good going on?

try and get your hands on some GM syncromesh or pennzoil sycnromesh. liquid gold that stuff is.
all the DSM guys (you know, eagle talons, mitsubishi eclipse, plymouth laser) run it, plain jane DSM trannies are utter trash, my brother used to have one and it was basically impossible to not grind 2nd. filled that puppy up with some syncromesh and wualah.

if that doesn't float your boat i too have heard some good things about redline's gear oils.

I heard the best reason not to re-engineer the lubricants of a sealed gearbox from accomplished racer and engine builder Steve Dinan. Think about it, a gear box is designed to maintain tooth clearances as a result of the resistans of the oil to be squeezed out of tight spaces. Think about your ring gear. Now take out the old stuff and put in something thinner and 2 things happen: first your seals start to leak all over and second your gear clearances all change for the worst. Clean oil is still my favorite any day. If it came from the factory with it, that is what it likes to stay with I have found.

So Pennzoil syncromesh is safe for our transmissions? I put some of that in a honda that you could not go into second going up or down and put in the syncromesh and within a month shifted like a new transmission!!

I've been nothing but happy with Redline in all my cars.

Porsche the factory, exclusively recommends and fills all their vehicles with Mobil1. I have used it in all of my cars (motor and TX) for street and track for years with no problems.

ooof! didn't even think about it! not quite sure what the viscosity is, i'll check the requirements on a DSM next time i'm at work, though now that i think about it i'm guessing they don't require such a high viscosity oil.
