Can anyone tell me what years/models have the black door handles?
Specifically interested in knowing if they are interchangeable with the chrome ones fitted on a 77.
Are they plastic or painted/coated metal?
TIA

My 78 has them. They are metal with some sort of paint or enamel.

If the tops are in bad shape and the chrome is gone I would like to suggest you put the right on the left side and you will find the chrome gleams on the bottoms. No one will know except us.

Thanks Ryan.
Can I ask how they look after the years regards scratches and chipping?
Considering whether to dechrome and powdercoat or look for second hand ones.
Looked at similar black plastic handles for VW golf/rabbit but the lock and catch is different and would be a PITA to modify.
Literally brilliant idea Vince. Think I may have inverted them previously anyway and the chrome looks fairly lustrous for 30 years.
Personally I simply prefer the look of the black against the guards red and have blacked out everything else.

Mine look like crap, but you have to take into account the fact that my whole car was a state when i bought it. I'm sure they would be fine if you were to powder coat them

Hi
Recently ordered a new door handle from sydney and was sent a black door handle (i have chrome ones). i rang the guy back and told him this and he said he had never seen chrome door handles on a 924 and couldnt help me. Reading this forum has reasured that they are original chrome ones. Whats interesting though is that sitting the 2 different door handles side by side on the inside they have different parts and they are a slightly different size. i have a 77, was it only the early models with this feature? _________________ Red 1977 Porsche 924 CGT...THE MORPH IS COMPLETE |

I have a 77 too and it appears that the early models had chrome ones while the latter were black.
Expect your lever broke where it goes around the lock barrel, a weak spot. Note the "pin" that pushes on the door mechanism to open. Does your black one have this or is that different? Reason i ask is that i looked at VW Golf ones that appear similar externally but the catch part was completely different. Maybe the latter ones have a different door mech also?
Heres a poor pic (all chrome, just shadows) to give you an idea. Appreciate a pic of yours if it is different, but if it is similar maybe we could do a swap?
BTW how much was it from Porsche?
Cheers,
Roger

Good pictures. It is slow uploading, hope youre not on dial up!
Yea they are different. I assume the door catch mechanism must be different too on the later cars.
It looks like even if you remove the pin (and extra crap) from the plunger finger (whatever) it may still be too short to activate the door release. Possibly you can fit a spacer cap on the end or carefully drill a hole and fit a screw to make up the distance.
I have found that the handles from a 76 Audi Fox are the same as the chrome ones. Maybe you can source one from an old VW wrecker, but these are now hard to get as well.

Hey
I went lookin for chrome door handle.......very hard to find. so i had to use the black ones instead. Ok so you know the black door handles to not go staight on where the chrome ones do. i got mine modifyed by a friend to make them work properly.
So i need to order another black one now so i got matching black door handles. _________________ Red 1977 Porsche 924 CGT...THE MORPH IS COMPLETE |
