Well -I finally had a good day to swap trans.
Everything went fine until I tried to get the coupling back on.
I was done- except for the coupling menace. The only thing that saved me today was this quote from Lizard a while back.
Lizard wrote:
actually the 4 speed audi weights about 110lb, the audi 5 speed 115lb and also the snailshell 20mm shaft weights about 85lb, and the G31 25mm shaft 90lb, all full of fluid, I just pulled a G31 out of my track car project and I never even bothered to use a jack as it just gets in the way, I just dropped it on my chest and then set it on the ground beside me.

I had to lift this trans up twice with no jack- very doable if you’re really pissed off.
The first time because my jack leaked out fluid and stopped lifting 1/2 way.

For all those attempting swapping ,the coupling only will slide onto the torque tube one way- you have to spin it until it slide fully on-it will get stuck 3/4 if it is not on the correct spline.
Then the tack weld serves a really good purpose on the coupling because----
If you put your trans in --and the loose tack give way--- and you are not lined up on the splines correctly---and you take a big screw driver to force it on ----the clamp just may shoot all the way into the torque tube----- where all the wishes in the world will not bring it back. So drop the trans and do it again... ouch I am sore.
Porsche payback is never fun- I hope this donor trans works:

The gears are fine - just real tight to pull in and out- Is this normal for a trans that has been sitting for a long time?- Will it loosen up on its own?

Ah sounds like the same situation Ryan and I will be in later this week when he gets his replacement transmission. Ah the fun of it all hu!

You should get one of those long pointer things with a magnet on the end. Helps when parts go way out of reach with out a prayer of getting them!

Have you put the donor back in? Was it drained of fluid before transport? If so... did you fill it back up? I am told synthetic is the way to go. There was a techincal bulletin back in the early to mid 1980s on VW transmissions and switching over to synthetic to smooth out shifting especially when the transmission and weather are cold.

wow that really was an old quote,

glad to hear you got it in though. And the gears may loosen up once it has been driven, but it is hard to say.

so did you swap a 4 speed for a 5 speed? or just a better condition 4 speed.

i'd love to put a 5 speed in mine, but apart from the distinct lack of spare parting in australia, I cant seem to find any specific information if the two audi transmissions from N/A's are directly interchangable.

Pretty sure thay are idential apart from about 9" longer case at the back. Afterall they were bolted to the same Audi engines at one time.
