Hi yall. Trying to get this new engine / cooling system bled, I'm trying to figure out exactly where a hose goes.
Its the hose that comes off the coolant expansion tank right below the radiator cap. I had thought that there was a second overflow tank or something like that & had even installed a make-shift one, but now that I look at it I can't figure out where the hose is really supposed to go. No hints in Haynes, and the Katalog just shows a hose going off into space. I'd like to hook it up properly to troubleshoot another problem -- near overheating.
Getting a lot of steam & temp is going scarily close to the red. Tried bleeding several times, running the engine with the cap off & bleeder plug out looks like it works, but there's something up. When it gets done spitting air out the bleeder plug & you put it all back together and go for a drive it builds up a weird amount of steam.
Thanks!

Its all in the catalogue, you just need to zoom in to see it.

I think you are talking about hose 5 below. As you can see from the faintly dashed line I've highlighted in the larger red box, the catalogue shows the end of that hose running into the upper opening on the passenger side of the rad. Below that opening is a second opening which connects to the bottom of the water pump.

Hmmm. After re-reading your post, I think you may be refering to hose 46? That is an overflow hose, it usually just runs down in front of the rad (into space ) to dump coolant if the rad cap releases pressure.

Are your cooling fans working?

If they are, I suspect that your new engine has a blown headgasket.

Try a new radiator cap. It may not be holding pressure.

In addition to the advice above:

Make sure you have the correct thermostat and that it is working correctly. The large hose from the thermostat to the radiator should be very hot if the car is overheating.

Also check your fan belt tension.

Do a compression check.

Chrenan:
Yes, it's number 46. Everything else is hooked up as per the diagram, but as of now I've got 46 running to a secondary coolant expansion tank. So I guess it can just run out into the air? Freaky!
Gohim:
Ha, you get the prize. The cooling fan was hooked up backwards! Rotating backwards, so at high speed driving, the engine would cook OK. In stop & go traffic, the vehicle velocity closely matches the speed of the cooling fan, thus no cooling! When it was parked though, air flow backwards was enough to keep it out of the red, leading me to believe that it was OK to drive.
Audidog:
That's a good idea, but try sourcing one! Let's see what EBS has...
Paul:
That stuff is all OK, but good to check anyway.

Cool. drove it around quite a bit today after swtiching the fan wires & it seems to be doing fine!!

No. 46 is the pressure release/overflow pipe. It should just point to the ground.
