Hi Everyone
Great site - good to be amongst like minded people!
I've got a 1987 registered ('88 model) 924S Le Mans. It's in great condition (40K miles) with FPSH. I'd like to keep it as standard as possible.
Which brings me to my question - as it was a limited edition with 7J 15 for the rear wheels - should it still use stock 924S tyres (195/65/15 V)? Have been in touch with the local Porsche Dealer and that is what they recommend. Not wishing to knock them, they are very helpful, but I'm sure they're more suited to knowing about this years Boxster than mine!
Secondly, if this is the case, they have told me that I should use 195/65/R15 91W PIRELLI N1 (the Porsche approved one). Not surprisingly these work out far more expensive - but are they worth it? Every report I've read on the 6000 states they are not exactly the best tyre in their class. Is there any benefit to fitting these?
Many thanks in advance for your help |

With the 7J wheels you should be running wider tires. The Dealer that you checked probably gave you the Factory recommendation for the standard 6J wheels.
I will take a look at the Porsche Tech Bulletin Manual when I get a chance to see what tire width you should be running.
The N1 spec is a Porsche approved spec for special Z-rated tires. N1 tires are supposed to be a different spec than standard Z-rated tires. |

The tire used by NASA Spec 944 is the Toyo Proxy 225/50/15 and works great on a 7" rim, however there will be more gap between the tire and the fender, but I am guessing yours is lower than standard. I use a 205/50/15 on my 6" rims, they are Sumotumo's w/ 160 tread rating, making them barely legal, and cost about $50 each. Good for about a year, and slippery when wet too.
You can think outside the box when to comes to tires. I'm always trying to put a wider tire on my cars.
What is FPSH? _________________ 88 924S |

I just looked in the Porsche 98 Technical Bulletins Book, and was shocked to find that the recommended rear tires with 7J X 15 wheels is the 195/65VR15 (note says no chain clearance).
For the 7J X 16, the recommended rear tires are 205/50VR15 (notes say check tire clearance, and no chain clearance).
Personally, I have always run 205/60/VR15s on 6J X 15 wheels. I would love to try 7Js on the rear to see what the difference is. |

Gohim - thanks for looking that up for me. Looks like I'll be sticking to skinny ones then. Still not sure about the N1 Pirelli 6000s though - although lets face it - Porsche knows just a tad more about this sort of thing than I do. |
