I got a new hatch seal when in the US the other week. I thought it would be a nice little 5 minute job yesterday, but it ain't quite the case.

The seal is one-peice, so I need to remove the struts to get it on. However the struts aren't held on by bolts or screws... in fact it doesn't look like they're meant to come off! Anyone got a tip on how to easily remove the struts?

If I had of known they'd need to be removed I would have bought new struts too!

Gavin.

you mean the hatch struts, im assuming. im also assuming that you want to take them off of the part where they attach to the car. they should just pop off, if im not mistaken. i mean, MY car's just pop off with a few hard hits (be careful). good luck.

They are attached with a ball joint, like your knee. With enough twisting pressure the strut will pop off the mount, like your knee.

My hatch seal is made so that you don't have to remove the struts, interestingly enough.

Yes, you have to gently pry off the struts. The plastic is often brittle so be gentle and try to work it out a little at a time without getting it on too much of an angle, or the plastic socket will crack.

Some ball joint sockets are cross drilled and locked into place by a wire. It you have these wires, remove them before trying to pop off the strut.

Also have a broom stick or something to support the hatch, it is heavy.

Thanks Paul - I've already got my hitech hatch-holder-opener because the current struts are real head-busters...!

Did you use adhesive, or just press it on??

It has a gooey adhesive *inside* the seal where it presses onto the body. That must be why it costs so much!

It just pressed on and is hanging in there real well. No leaks.

your knee is NOT a ball joint, but your hip is..... However, your knee WILL pop with enough twisting pressure! (with only about 8lbs of force actually...)

Don't forget to pry off those little c-clips firts.

Second when I put my new seal on it looked like it had to go one a certain way and sure enough it did. Eye ball it first.
