A collection of my notes, now you finally know what all the numbers mean. Enjoy!

K26 #6 turbine wheel - 48mm minor diam, 54mm major diam

#6 turbine housing minor bore = 48mm
#8 turbine housing minor bore = 55mm

Four numbers trailing the "K26" =
example, '79 RoW 931 K26-2470
"24" = 2.4" diameter for the compressor exducer (61mm)
"70" = compressor inducer is 70% the diameter of the exducer (42.7mm)

"R" - still unsure about this...
"6.10" refers to the turbine wheel, there's no rhyme or reason with KKK's numbering system here. For example a 5.10 could be larger than a 6.10 which could be larger than a 4.10. Stupid engineers...

The KKK part numbers have a little code too-
for example: 5326 970 7007
53 (?)
26 (compressor exducer)
970 (?)
70 (compressor inducer percentage of exducer)
07 (the last two digits look like version numbers)

But wait, there's more...

Some general turbo info:

------------------------------------------------------------
Trim = (minor diameter^2 / major diameter^2) * 100

inducer - small diameter of the compressor wheel
exducer - large diameter of the compressor wheel

large inducer: more flow, more lag, surging concern

large exducer: less lag


large turbine: less flow restriction / less backpressure (more top end power), more lag

low A/R: more restrictive, less lag

I can't stand it, what does it all mean?!

Well, among other things any K26 bearing housing with swap out, so we can easily upgrade to water-cooled housings from a 951 or Audi.

Also, there is a huge variety of compressor wheels available to us (though you have to change the housing to match).

If you want to change to a k26/8 hotside, all you need to do is bore out the exhaust housing and swap turbine wheels.

Cool, eh?

Good stuff, but I have two 6407s, and I can't figure out if they are series 1,2 or 3. I have different publications that list the 6407 as either a series one or a series three.

Hey folks,
A little more info- I picked up an early Audi oil cooled turbo. It's a 5326 970 6412. The important numbers are the "26" and "64" (compressor diameters). The compressor wheel is the same as the '80 and earlier US turbos. The bearing housing is angled slightly and won't mount up to our stock mount. The hot side housing uses a much smaller turbine wheel and outlet diameter while the inlet diameter is much larger than ours. Interesting.

Anyway, I'm going to be using the compressor wheel and cold housing from the Audi- just to make the plumbing easier for the IC.

nick, is the turbine housing of that turbo in good shape? No cracks or anything? If it's so, I would be interested in that turbine housing.... I have this kind of rebuilt K26 (early Audi), but turbine housing is cracked (a lot). can you tell me the exact turbine wheel diam?

I haven't taken off the housing yet, but it looks pretty decent on the outside. Exit diameter = 50mm on the Audi, about 56mm for the 931 (on the innermost diameter). I assume you'll need the turbine wheel too?

I wouldn't mind trading you for a bottle of Estonia's finest vodka- I know you guys hoard some good stuff

I had the same question. The story I got was that they are a distributor for KKK. The p/n's jive with what nick has posted here. There are no tool marks on the unit anywhere. So it is either brand new or freshly rebuilt but for $400.00 dollars U.S. who's arguing

Just the one. No need to be greedy. Just kidding, the old lady was less than pleased to have to shell out 400 let alone 800. I had gone through a fiasco with another seller. He tried to sell me a bum turbo for 100. He had the same problem with his that I had. The hotside housing cracked and destroyed the turbine fan. When I inspected the unit he had filed down the blades to hide the evidence. Saw right through it though. I can't wait to strap this sucker on though. I think I am about a week from starting my car for the first time in ten years!!!
