Hey guys
My waste gate is on its way out, so i was wondering.
1. How easy is one to fit (for a non mechanic like me)
2. How much is a good price for a new one (i can get one from a scrap yard for £90 ($140) of dubious quality)
3. I understand i could fit a 930 waste gate but i would need an intercooler as the pressure is higher??

But mainly i want to know how easy is one to fit, i can work a spanner do i need specialist tools or setting up.

cheers

I thought the wastegates on the 931 and 930 were the same? Anyways, in the words of a German mechanic near me, the cost for a new wastegate from Porsche is:

TWO SOWS AND BUCKS

Ants, forget about a new one. It would be way too expensive. You probably don't need one anyway. The only things that go wrong with them is that the diaphragm ruptures, the spring breaks, and the housing gets worn by the spring. The diaphragm is available from andial.com for about $50. I'm not sure where to get a new spring. Last time I spoke with andial they didn't carry the .5 or .7 bar springs.

The 930 is the same wastegate but with a stiffer spring to get more boost. -Troy

I am in the process of rebuilding my wastegate. It is almost completely apart but for some of the exhaust studs. The problems associated with rebuilding the wastegate are those that are commonly associated with rebuilding a 20 + year old piece of exhaust equipment --seized bolts and parts. It can be easy or very hard to take apart as long as the hardened iron studs will turn out. Any repair of the wastegate should entail replacement of the studs. Mine broke and I am drilling them out. (Note, I broke two screw extractors trying to remove the studs and had to drill them out). This is probably why mechanics don't waste their time rebuilding these parts rather than just buying new ones and passing the cost to the customer
Once you get everything apart, replace the rubber diaphragm, check the spring and associated washers for wear, clean the valve (sand blast it), and check the valve seat. A machine shop can recut both the valve and seat if necessary, and since you have it apart, might as well have it done.

Thanx Guys
I think i'll leave it to the pro's, the guy who fitted my recon turbo last year had to put a restrictor valve in the waste gate cos it wasn't sealing properly.
I'll get him to rebuild it then, thanx for your help.

Hey Ants,
I did not intend to discourage you from rebuilding your own wastegate. If you can purchase one inexpensively from a salvage yard, try rebuilding it while you drive your car. This way you have a project to work on while your car is still operational.
If you can rebuild it, have the mechanic replace the rebuilt unit with your broken one. You save a little money and learned something new.

They are probably about $600 dollars new considering i once saw a used one for $240 stating ("less than half the price of a new one").

It is the same as a 930 wastegate, but depending on what model of 930 you pull it off of. Some 930s have the vent line coming out of the top (black plug that says "porsche" on yours would be then missing). Some of them will have different pressures of opening I am sure..I doubt that all 930s ran the same bar as 931s did. Most of them will probably be 1 bar opening.

Ants: YOU CAN DO THIS JOB. It's not hard and actually quite enjoyable if you're attitude is right.

Where siezed studs are concerned, I'd soak 'em in WD 40 for a few days, and if they still won't come out with that and a touch of heat, screw it (pardon the pun) and retap them. But they should come out.

Also, the rubber and spring are really the only components that'll need replacing, aside from the new nuts and bolts that are really manditory.

I used a JB Weld and heat treated mine and it still works great. Get a Dremel tool or use a few drill attachments to get the walls properly roughened up and cleaned; also for smoothing over when the job is done.

Actually, on thinking about it, I had siezed nuts and didn't even have to re tap, as it was a nut and bolt assembly.

Um...let me rephrase that...

I checked the dealer price on a new wastegate a few years ago. It was over $1600!
