I found a 944S for cheap without a motor, will a regular 944 motor go into it?

How cheap? It's all relative in the end. |

Yes it will. But the 944S is heavier that the regular 944... so you'll lose out by putting the 8valve motor in it.

"how does the 944S vary from the 944?"
Well, for starters, it's close to 300lbs heavier. Don't know why though. Also the 944S engine is a double overhead cam 16 valve 2.5 liter engine that produces something like 188hp.

I think if you compair apples to apples the 944S is much closer in weight to the 944 than it seems at first glance. The 944S was offered with ABS, Air bags, sport suspension and of course the 16V 188hp motor.
Now if you compare a 944 of the same year say 1987 with ABS, Air Bags and sport suspension I bet the wieghts are much closer. Not sure but I would bet on it.
Look at the original 944 and its weight. Should be much less than the final year 2.7L model. They had no power seats, no abs, no air bags. Of course they did not have the aluminum suspension components that the newer models have.
Anyway. What are you going to get this chassis for. Likely better to just find a 944 that has a blown motor. It will be the same thing if you do not have the S motor, or sport suspension that the S usually comes with.

eturbo...
The source of my weight/performance info for the 944S is Michael Cotton's 924/944 book.

MAS not questioning your data or intelegence.
Just wanted to make some of the differences known. I will investigate it some more and see what my references say.

ok, still trying to decide what to do, if I got the 944S would a turbo motor bolt right in? if I bought a 944 would a turbo motor bolt right in? I decided I want a turbo motor, i don't think i can buy a turbo chassis though because of insurance reasons. if not a turbo will a 16v head fit onto an 8v motor? wow it just occured to me that this is a 924 message board, does anyone know where the 944 message board is? thanks

That's OK, jamez. That's the beauty of the people on this board. They'll even help a non 924/931 person. Well, for the most part. From what others have said, I don't think you would get the same help from the more expensive Porsche car owners.
Sorry about the technical questions. Don't have experience with that. |

Yes, a turbo motor will bolt into a 944 or 944S it will also fit in a 924S. I would go with the 944/944S style If I where you. Its not as streamlined but I think it looks alot more Bad ass then the 924 style (sorry guys) Also the interior is alot nicer then the 924 style. Thats a good question about the 16v on a 8v If you find out let me know if you can swap heads. Ya I know what you mean about $$$$ Im a freshmen this year and I have been working my ass of to keep my 924S and all its fun mods going. Also you can get alot more HP out of a turbo motor then a NA one. Good luck

Checked a few publications.
944S is ony 10 lbs more than the 944 of the same year. 1987. 924S was over 100bls less though. Road and track comparison test of 924S, 944, 944S and 944 Turbo article.

Guys just for grins and the market, list what these cars are going for.
To swap a 944S to a turbo engine , you will need the complete engine including DME and wastegate. YOu might also have to swap out radiators. Everything else ahould be a bolt in a go.
I know a fellow who has a 944TS motor if you've got the money. This project will cost you though. You might want to hold off until your out of college before you tackle something like this.
