I don't know if anyone else is noticing this, but loading up the board pages, reply pages and threads are seeming to be a little slower to contact the 924board than before. I'm on a DSL connection, things were definatly smoother and quicker about 2 weeks ago. _________________ Mike

I agree too, mike
I am on an ISDN connection at 115kbps and the board is slower over the last couple of weeks.

yeah, it's very strange. It doesn't seem to be related to the time of day so it probably isn't bandwidth related.
I've run a few checks and I can't see anything obvious. The server it runs on is getting really old and should be replaced but I don't have the spare cash and besides that shouldn't cause the slow-down.
I have to do an upgrade of the board software so I think I'll take the board off-line for an hour or two this weekend and run a few tests. _________________ 1979 924 (Gone to a better place)

Paul, you're always so quick to offer. People like you make this board what it is.
I haven't worked out a plan to replace the server or got any quotes. What I'd like to do is get something with heaps of disk space so I can integrate a photo server so members can upload photos directly to the board rather than having to host pics externally like we do now.
I'll take the board offline for an hour or two on Sunday (my time, Saturday night your time) and do the software upgrade and run a bunch of tests to see if I can find out where the slowdown is. _________________ 1979 924 (Gone to a better place)

I haven’t checked with the rest of the members but I am sure the “Omaha Crew” is ready to pitch in what we can when needed.
It’s scary to think where we would be without YOU and this board. _________________ 1980 931

The web server software (apache) was reporting some very strange errors. I stopped and started it and the database software as well for good measure.
The board seems much snappier now.
I'll still upgrade the board software on Sunday and I'll see if there are any upgrades for the web server software and upgrade that at the same time. _________________ 1979 924 (Gone to a better place)

I think I have a few processors and motherboards laying around, if not can send you a donation.
What kind of server are you using? Current configuration, memory, processors, etc... never know what I might have laying around, Just go rid of an old server well two years old... but nice dual processor AMD setup, small time, but nice.
I imagine you arent exactly running a Rack...
Anyway it is running much better. |

I can send by paypal. Just say the word. What d'ya need...? Quarter? Fifty cents?
I suppose, knowing Peter's generosity, he'll never ask. I say we just start paypal-ing him money until he says stop.
Paul, you go first.
There's an awful lot of people on this board now. Surely we can all scrape together a few bucks to replace the hardware. What d'ya say Peter?
The board was down this morning (US time) and Jazzerpet suggested we all just sell our cars. THAT'S how serious this is! _________________ '80 924 n/a SOLD |

We're still running on very low-end hardware. It's a 400Mhz Intel with 128M RAM and 8Gig of disk space. It was reasonably high-end when I built it about five years ago. The setup is very reliable, the last time the server was rebooted was over three years ago when I did a full upgrade of the operating system. It hasn't been powered down in over five years.
For such an old box it still performs well although I am starting to wonder how much longer it can keep going.
The main reasons that I'd like to replace it is to get a lot more disk space so we can allow pictures to be uploaded for use on the board and it needs to have a rack-mount case (currently a micro-tower). The guys who run the data centre where it lives are insisting that all servers are rack-mounts.
As they say in the classics "Don't send any money". I'll get a quote from Dell and then we can throw around some ideas and options. _________________ 1979 924 (Gone to a better place)

Paul,
I'll also send some funds by PayPal when required. Even though the system is working fine now, 5 years is old in terms of computer technology. It may be best to plan for something now by collecting funds, because if the server does go kaboom one day, it will be a lot more difficult to get a hold of people and get things running. I'd hate to lose this site as it is an amazing resource.
Have you thought of a similar system to Rennlist? You know, where you have registered members who pay an annual fee? It might be a way to keep some funds available at all times for minor upgrades. Of course, it might be a lot more complicated than it looks, but just a thought.
