Ok, I'm trying to adjust the valve clearances on my 1982 924 Lux. According to the Haynes manual, one turn on the adjusting screw changes the clearance by 2 thousandths of an inch. Every time I try turning the screw, the gap closes up tight after about a quarter turn, even though I need to close the gap by 4 thou which should be 2 turns of the screw. What am I doing wrong?! |

You're not turning far enough. Follow the directions, keep turning, take the feeler gauge out while adjusting.
All will become clear once you're made the first rotation...

Now I see! The adjuster locks off after each full turn. A bit annoying if you don't want to close or open the valve clearances by 2 thou at a time, but at least the engine doesn't 'tick' any more now I've adjusted them!!
Thanks,
Peter

That's right. Just when you think your wrench is going to snap, it'll complete the turn. The first time you do it is a bit worrying, but it's the design.

yes the first time i took my head apart, i wondered why you would have such a stupid design, because the valves would get wrecked up by the threads...but the valves are really hard and don't get scratched. |
