External Oil Cooler

I am looking to install an external oil cooler on my 924, is there a kit that has all of the components in it? Or do I have to piece a kit together? Also, what kind of cooler works well for this car? I drive through the Mojave Desert everyday to go to work, so I will need a really GOOD cooler. Thanks for the info gentlemen!

I recomment piecing a kit together. In fact, I don't know of anyone that does sell a kit. Most of the components are available inexpensively from Racer Parts Wholesale. I recommend you check out my webpage, look at my install.

I recommend a Mocal oil cooler, as they're generally regarded to be the best. Mine is a "Long" brand, good quality, no issues, traded parts for it. You want the type with screw-in fittings, not barbed. You will want Aeroquip type hose, as expensive as the fittings are. You should be able to keep cost down by eliminating a thermostat and it's associated fittings (4 hose ends and 4 adapters), being in the desert - but use a good quality cooler, just in case, as they'll be less likely to burst if they get hit with high pressure. Eliminating a thermostat also makes the work of the plumbing simpler.

I've had oil hoses (non-braided type) burst on me - trust me, it's bad enough on track, you don't want it to happen on the road!!! I can email you my in-car footage from that, if you'd like to see what it's like.

Take extra car in routing of the hoses - this will be critical to durability. Protect the hoses from rubbing on anything, especially the manifold, and protect anything at all from rubbing on the hoses! They're like buzz-saws with a little vibration, and will saw their way through anything.

Plan for around $200 worth of hoses and fittings to plumb. Use a remote filter mount, and a larger filter - these will give you added capacity in the system, about 1 quart extra, for better cooling also.

I'd plan on taking a weekend to do it right, not rushing the install. If you can find racers locally who have worked with the stuff and can assist, it wouldn't hurt to get their advice on plumbing. However, I think you can see the routing I used, and it should work for you. I think I used -10 AN hose.

One more thing - thing about installing an oil temp sender while you're at it! Easy to do, with the remote filter head, as there's a boss in the top you can easily drill and tap before installation. The VDO gauge is sold by, again, Racer Parts Wholesale, costs around $40, sender for around $20, sender thread is M10x1.0, gauge looks totally stock in the dash, and it's extremely cool to have.

As for sizing the cooler, will have to look at the sizes again, but just having one should be quite sufficient! Just find a size that will easily zip-tie to the front of the radiator, in front of the fan.

Alex Roy bought a kit from earls its for a 2000 toyota tacoma and the adapter plate just so happens to fit he explains the installation on his site... contact him Ive talked to him

Hey, I sent the info on the parts to Paul, perhaps he can post it here, but to recap quick... the filter adapter is one of the most generic available, it's not some obscure metric size, it's like 3/4-16 or something. A chevy size.

Also, I was wrong about the gauge costs - the VDO gauge and matching sender each cost about $20, $40 for the pair. Bolt-in to the center console, looks totally stock, works beautifully. Check the Construction pics on my website.

Vaughan,

You said you used a -10 hose size, would a -8 be too small? I talked to a buddy of mine that is into racing and he told me that a -8 would be sufficient for my purposes. What do you think about this? If you think I should go with -10 stuff, I will. Thanks!

Try the cooler off of an RX-7. They're pretty common, and were pretty high capacity units. The RX-7 relied on the oil for most of it's cooling. Wacky rotaries.

Although the MAzda unit is a decent size if you place it in fron tof the radiator you are defeating what you are trying to set out and sure - that is high engien temperature.
Withthe Mazda unti it blocks the flow over the radiator and causes the water temp to increase.
I tried this in the mid 90's and decided to go with a smaller 9 row cooler that keeps oil cool and water at the correct temperature.

I just got my cooler from one of the speed shops. We modified the oil line to change from the standard Porsche fittings to suit readily available hydralic fittings.
I neglected to mentionthis was on a 931 - which I now run both the standard cooler and the after market unit.
