|
|
Got my 924 up and going this weekend running on Mega Jolt Lite Jr. Another build it yourself ignition controller like Mega Squirt. It uses the Ford EDIS module and coil packs. Hardest part was mounting the trigger wheel and trigger. I used the entire serpentine pulley and trigger wheel from a 1.9L Escort. I'll be using the pulley part to drive my supercharger at a later date.
It already starts better and throttle response is much quicker. I haven't done any tuning yet. I pre-programmed the ignition curve to look a lot like the Euro 924. I'll play with the "vacume advance" when I start tuning for fuel milage. I'll probably open up the plug gap a little too.
I pulled the stock distributor and coil then plugged the hole. Much cleaner looking on that end of the engine now.
This is an excellent way to convert to DIS on the cheap. With a little scrounging it can be done for less than $200. If you are planning to convert to EFI you should probably look at building a Mega Squirt II controller or wait for Ultra Mega Squirt to come out. These options where not available when I started my project.
Edit: Trying to figure out how to post some pictures. Changed ISP recently and lost my alloted web space for this so need to find a web based service. This is only a TEST:

OK, got a couple pictures for ya. Took a while to find a decent place to host them.
The black box is the MJLJ. I kinda crammed it all together so as to leave room for the intercooler and a new (and better looking!) surge tank.
Sesor is mounted between the water pump and crank pulley. Kinda tricky place but it well protected there.
This is the bracket for the sensor. The long leg bolts to the lower cam belt cover attachment hole and the short leg bolts to the right front oil pan bolt.
And just a quick peak into the future blower install. Just mocking it up to see what problems lie ahead.

Excellent work, I am particularly fond of the crank trigger wheel.
That whipple should work nice for you, are you planing on using an intercooler too?? What are your HP goals.

Hey, Thanks for the nice replies guys!
Leadfoot, I kinda started this whole process without really knowing what I was doing so my main problem is the fact I have WAY too much blower! Basicly I have an engine that breaths ~48cid per revolution (@ 80% VE) and a blower that breaths ~86cid per revolution (@90% VE). I am in the process of building a rather large pulley for the charger wich will give me an overdrive of about 1.3 to 1. My blower is used and has some wear in it so taking that into account along with other restriction problems I may end up with, I figure I will end up with atleast 14psi (1 bar). 225HP? I dont know really. I just want to see if it works and holds together!
Yes I will be intercooled.

I see you have a set of headers/exstractors on the car, where did you get these?
Cheers

Rob,
They are MSDS
http://www.msdsinc.com/
I bought them 2 years ago. They are the "racing" header because they will not actually sell the other they advertise. Not sure why they still list them. Quality is pretty good on them but the gaskets suck. Plan to make your own.

Sounds good, would be nice to see if the engine and driveline holds up.
If you oversize the blower pulley to undrive the supercharger, this will give you more wrap around the pulley and will lower the boost limit. An aluminium pulley will also slip less but make more noise and reduce belt life somewhat.
You could also run a blow off valve or use a race bypass valve which I think has the capabilities to change boost limits. These bypass valves are used for high psi applications. You might need to research these though.
