Guy's,

I thought i would post this little snippet of info for those who have commented about the 924's steering, or those of us who race these cars.
I recently aquired a VW Golf (Rabbit for our colonial cousins ) quick rack from Quaife engineering here in the UK. As has been mentioned here a few times, i can confirm that the RHD 931 required the LHD Golf rack. I am guessing the reverse is true for the LHD 931's. The only slight issue is the length of the Golf pinion is slightly shorted than the 931 item, by about 12mm. Now having spoken to Quaife, they will be looking into making a bespoke pinion for our cars, as the tooling is nothing more complicated than adding half an inch to it's splined length.
The LHD rack which suits RHD 931's is available in a 3.1 turn lock to lock, and the RHD Golf, which suits LHD 931's is available in 2.9 turns lock to lock. Compared to the stock 4.02 turns lock to lock, this is quite an improvement. The main issue i have on the hillclimbs is getting the car turned in on the very tight bends, where i am flailing around like a lunatic to get the lock on then off then on the other way. This results in me having to often make 3 turns of the wheel at 40-60 mph, on a road barely wide enough for the car.
So now you know, if this is of interest to you, drop Len a mail at Quaife to get the ball rolling. They are going to make me a new pinion as a one off, but have stated that with fair interest, they would make a batch and have then as a shelf item.

Regards,

Steve

Dan,

We haven't discussed price as yet. I am hoping to get down to see them tomorrow. They are only 10 miles from me. I don't believe however it will be a big sum. Adding 15.. to the CNC length measurement is hardly going to take hours of R&D!!
As soon as i hear back from them, i will drop you a line. I will also get an email addy for Len when i speak to him.
I have a feeling this could be quite a popular item, once the full fitment is confirmed. Guess I'mm the appointed guinea pig again

Hmmm... subject to interchangeability to the 944 platform, this might be something we could get Paragon to sign on for, might be quite a demand!

Shall I give Jason a jingle??

Why bother?? Quaife have a US division. So if it becomes available here, the US arm can get it in. Simple really. If people are really interested, the best route would be to contact Quaife UK direct, make them aware of their interest and take it from ther.

I run the 924 N/A crossmember and I think must have an NA steering rack. Did you menton they do one for the NA car also?

As you know I'm not sure about quick racks as there is a tendancy to overcorrect and on the hills thats not good. However if they were going to be cheap enough I may consider trying it.

Cheers
Simon

Simon,

NA and turbo are the same. If you went down this path, you would need the Golf LHD rack at 3.1 lock to lock. Better than 4.02 i think, but not so quick as the old rallty Escorts at 2.2 turns l2l.
I popped in yesterday, and they are going to make a new pinion for me. If these is a bit of interest, they will make a run of them.
So my advice guy's is to contact Quaife and speak to Len. If they get the demand, they will make them.
It's down to you. I have gone as far as i can for now. I have a quick rack, and have proven what works and what doesn't. They will make a run of them, but not on my promise of orders.
