Anyone know how to tell the difference between early vs. late camshaft? I've got a few laying around, want to make sure I don't get that crappy emissions cam from the early cars in there. Presumably a number on the cam should correspond?
I doubt I have an early cam, really, but would like to make sure!! _________________ Vaughan Scott

Allegedly, a number starting with 047_ may indicate the early cam and 046_ the later one. For additional vagueness and confusion look here - http://www.924board.org/viewtopic.php?t=8895 _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."

Just put a caliper accross the lobe and the short ones are the early ones.

Works OK unless mine are all one type! Well, I suppose except to cross-check against what's already in the car... _________________ Vaughan Scott

Allright, I went out and measured them. The little one is 1.98" and the big one is 2.04".
Man, what a pain

Thanks Smoothie and Todd - sure enough, I've got one of each. One is an 047, looks to have the smaller lobes, and a 046 with apparently bigger lobes. Then there's one in the head (spare head which I'll be building), also looks like an 046 late cam by measuring the lobes.
Easiest would be to simply re-use my existing cam, but I believe it has some damage to some lobes, which will hurt efficiency a little! That plus I have I think some damaged lifters which could use to be removed from the rotation, no pun intended... _________________ Vaughan Scott
