|
|
Hello all,
I'm new here, but attend the PCGB forum on a fairly regular basis. I don't have a 924 but I'm close with a 924S2 or early 944
I restored my car from a bare shell over a period of 5 years and finally got it back on the road last April. The main aim for the project has been for a factory-style 'Club Sport' spec, aiming for reducing weight and tightening up the suspension where possible, whilst still keeping it comfortable for European trips (carpets, stereo, glass etc.).
Out of my weight saving obsessions, has grown a keen interest in the factory 924 GTS, GTR and GTP models - particularly the special aluminium parts used.
So, with an eye on future upgrades, I wondered if anyone had any detailed pictures and or weights for the aluminium torque tube and torsion bar-delete housings.
I have struggled to find any complete images other than the usual web sites, such as Friesinger.
Thanks in advance,
Jonny _________________ '84 944 |

I have always pondered about the idea of having aluminium torque tube built. It's not difficult to do per se, but the aluminium tube is very expensive and difficult to obtain.
As for torsion bar carrier, wouldn't waste time with that. Best solution would be a aluminium subframe that mounts trailing arms, sway bars etc. Best example is Kokeln rear subframe:
Of course it would make no sense for me in buying this thing for hefty cash and pay huge shipping and customs importing it to EU, I would obviously build it myself.
Of course, coil-overs at the rear is a must with this thing. _________________ '83 924 2.6 16v Turbo, 470hp

Thanks for the pic of the Kokeln unit - 25lb saving apparently.. As you say - using the outer aluminium mounts combined with a fabricated central section could work nicely.
The factory units look like it also mounts to the shell, either side of the tunnel, and uses standard fixing points.

Welcome here Jonny.
Doesn`t this look a lovely piece of kit?
There`s a guy on Rennlist who has made some aluminium torque tubes. Think he was selling them for a grand. No idea if he is still doing them or what the shipping would be. Wouldn`t be that difficult to make with the right gear or by a good fabrication shop.
There`s quite a few threads there on this subject that came up in a search. Remember these Yanks can`t spell aluminium correctly.
Lots of reading & hopefully good info here, but think you have to register & login to view pics.

That link looks like it may expire. Search terms were: aluminum "torque tube"
This is the first thread: http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/944-turbo-and-turbo-s-forum/611505-building-aluminum-torque-tube.html _________________ World`s quickest 924 2L slushbox

Thanks for the info RC.
I'm aware of the Rennlist construction, but really I was hoping for some images of the original factory versions.
Have I dreamt it, or was there a guy on here planning to re-build the aluminium tube from his 924 GTR? _________________ '84 944 |
