I have a 79 924 with a snailshell transmission, the shifter inside the car rattles very annoyingly at speed, so I bought 3 bushings from automotion based on the year of my car, and now that I've pulled the thing apart, it looks nothing like the diagram. If the snailshell transmission does indeed have a different shifter how can I quiet it up? Will this require new bushings for the actually linkages?
Thanks,
Zac |

for the snailshell tranny you will have a ball cup bushing and 2 bushings the same which are in the smal universal style joint inthe shifter mechanism, I am sorry to tell you though that you do need to pull the tranny to replace these parts. however if you are going to pull the tranny to replace them then you might consider pulling out the torque tube and cutting off the ball that is either welded on or threaded in, then drill and tap a hole in the torque tube where the ball was and then you can bolt on a Heim joint to the shift rod in place of the ball cup and then put a bolt through that to bolt it to the hole you drilled and tapped to the torque tube, but use red loctitie to prevent that bolt from backing out, this will perminently fix the ball cup part so that you will never need to go in there again. but the other one will need to be replaced every once in awhile.
as per the vibration this will help with alot of that vibration but you will still see some vibration esp if you have worn tranny/motor mounts. _________________ 3 928s, |

| Will it hurt anything if I don't bother with it till I have to replace my clutch, that way I can do it all at once? |

you can wait but be aware, if the ball coupling gets bad enough then it can pop off and then you wont be able to get the car in gear and you may be stuck somewhere just due to the fact you cant get it in. to gear that is _________________ 3 928s, |

Is your interior still in ... You could when you have time cut a hole in the middle of where the rear seat cushion are and that way pull the cup off and replace them, saves on time, put a cover over the hole and put your cushions back in place. _________________ 1979 porsche 924 Na

IIRC there's some additional info on the repairs needed for the snailshell vs. the regular Audi style trans in our Tech FAQ (above).
If you've got the wrong parts on Automotion's recommendation - I'd throw it back in their face and demand your money back, since it's their fault. I've seen this error in catalogs many times, they ought to be forced to fix their $hit.
If you look at the Performance Products catalog info for the 911/914, look at the Weltmeister shift coupler bushings (part # 901747). You likely need those. I haven't confirmed that they'd fit a '79 924, but that is the style of coupler you have and I suspect they would fit. Perhaps someone can check in the PET catalog, I don't have it handy... _________________ Vaughan Scott

This is what Lizard is talking about... I have it installed, but the car isn't drivable yet since I haven't put the exhaust back in nor have I replaced my bent tie rod or reinstalled my freshly repacked axles. However, the shifter does feel incredibly crisp compared to how it did when the bushings were disintegrated and the cup was almost completely worn out.
